The Senator clashed with Hegseth, demanding the Secretary make the case for continuing to wage war in Iran as the administration asks Congress to approve another $67 billion in emergency funding for the conflict, in addition to an estimated $37 billion already spent.
Kennedy, a staunch Trump ally who advocates a hawkish foreign policy, became visibly frustrated during a line of questioning about the potential consequences of pulling out of the war.
'Would [the regime] try to commence development again of a nuclear warhead?' Kennedy asked.
Hegseth replied, 'Part of the reason that President Trump had to have the courage to do what he did after Midnight Hammer [Trump's June 2025 airstrikes on Iran] was that they didn't give up their ambitions even though their nuclear sites had been obliterated.'
As Hegseth continued the lengthy response, Kennedy interrupted with an exclamation: 'Gosh, we need straight answers,' he said, repeating it for emphasis.

Hamas says it will not disarm in Gaza before Israel withdrawal
31 July 2026 13:29 BSTA senior Hamas official has said that the Palestinian movement will not take any steps toward disarmament before Israeli forces withdraw from Gaza.
Ghazi Hamad told Al Jazeera that Israel would have no role in the disarmament process. Instead, it is set to be carried out by a Palestinian national committee.
The armed group has largely abided by a ceasefire agreement that came into effect in October last year, as Israel continues a sustained bombing campaign in violation of the agreement, killing more than a thousand Palestinians and injuring many more.
According to the AFP news agency, Hamas sources said that the Palestinian technocratic committee established by the Board of Peace to govern Gaza will be "the sole entity" overseeing the process of managing and storing the group's weapons.
In separate comments to Reuters, Hamas reiterated that the handover of weapons was contingent on the withdrawal of Israeli forces, along with the increased flow of aid and goods into the territory

'Today, the Board of Peace reached a HISTORIC agreement for the COMPLETE DISARMAMENT of Hamas and all other armed groups in Gaza,' Trump said in a social media post, adding that the disarmament would come in phases.
'This is a monumental step toward lasting PEACE and SECURITY.'
