Can they for just one day not use schools or churches to open a few more booths so peeps don't have to wait in line for hours on end? Bit like what us lovely jubbly Brits do?

That's right yep. Some of them were voted in, some have since increased their majorities, some are a bit slower than others, but they will get there eventually. But they all have one thing in common. Reversing the immigration free for all that is the EU. Even Macron has twigged that the French will rise up before much longer. and the only reason they haven't already is because of some draconian lock down Coronavirus measures designed to limit the freedoms of the population.

If the changeover isn't until January then Trump is still President until then I suppose and can issue Presidential edicts until then.
