Hi guys
Was just wondering.. my favourite indicators are RSI, MACD, CCI and MA.. these are indicators which have been around for donkeys.. even before computers were used to process stock data.
With the advance in computers, are there any indicators which have been formed or evolved which work more reliably than the aforementioned? What do people use these days?
Cheers all

Don't see any mention of P&F on here lately. I like to keep an eye on it. I use 3x3 hilo on 1min.
Also weighted MAs for a crossover.
My favourite is the Indexia Speed/Resistance lines, which are objective trend lines. In an uptrend they divide the distance between the hi and lo of the trend into thirds and draw 2 lines from the lo to the division points. :cheesy:
Nice

I don't use anything apart form
:
mas - specialised
MACD (to confirm mas)
Keltner channels
Support and resistance - specifically Pivot Point and Value areas.

Almost all oscillators don't work in trending markets..

In some post somebody had mentioned forward looking indicators. I have failed to find that post. Would somebody be able to help? Thanks so much

osho67,

I also remember seeing this and I think it was mentioned in a thread by Mr Charts but no mention was made as to what the forward looking indicators were.

Some forward looking 'indicators':
Trend lines "The trend is your friend until the bend at the end" :)
Calculated targets [Not used by Paul :)]
Support and Resistance

"What do people use these days?" Naked ohlc charts + above

If I remember correctly the terms being used were leading indicators as opposed to lagging. By this definition trendlines and support resistance are lagging as they show what has happened in the past.

Paul

Futures are often used as a leading indicator particularly if trading stocks.

The trouble is if your trading futures you dont have a leading indicator for the leading indicator, if you see what i mean.

"By this definition trendlines and support resistance are lagging as they show what has happened in the past."

They also show where a price movement is likely to stop or continue in the future.

Predictive?

RSI (5period, 5 mins) >85 obought, <15 oversold
Close>Keltner 20 ema 2.5 st deviations .. obought ditto lower than lower band

MACD turns with a V shape in histogram going from all red/green to all green/red

and so on..

MA 3 period (H+L+C)/3 exponential closes above or below its 5 simple moving average in 5 mins: change of direction. if confirmed with MACD

and so on

Glenn,

It is still a lagging indicator by the definition of what osho67 was referring to and in fact trendlines are just the same as any other indicator as to what is likely to happen in the future. The reference to leading indicators did not include trendlines, SR or any of the other 1000s that are available. They were and are very different to that and if you ask Mr Charts I am sure he will confirm this.

I was not referring to Mr Charts information, I was just posting some of my own. If Mr Charts has another set of indicators, then fine.
I'm just offering the benefit of my own long experience.
I have not disagreed with you about whether something is lagging.
But if an 'indicator', however contrived, provides a probabilistic indication of the future, then it is a forward looking indicator.
If Mr Charts, or anyone, can predict the future without looking at previous/current data in some way, then I look forward to reading about it.
Best wishes
Glenn

Glenn,

I know what you mean but I think osho67 was referring to a specific post on specific leading indicators and I remember what they didnt include. Anyway we should maybe let osho67 speak for himself.

Yes I agree and understand. He was probably referring to a specific post and you remember what was not in it.
No problems with that.

I was just putting on my own two penneth on the subject of forward looking indicators, as did Madasafish.
Cheers

Guys,

MACD , MA ,..and most trend following indicators have NO predictive qualities and are solely designed to reduce noise..

Oscillators such as RSI . CCI, do have predictive qualities but you have to find the most optimised settings.. so your research for the next few years should be about what settings ..
