Hi Guys,

I thought we'd have a thread on stock tips and recommendations... Not sure if there was one before but couldn't see anything that leapt at me so here it goes.

SPLUNK Inc., SPLK:NASDAQ GS Stock Quote - Splunk Inc - Bloomberg

Download is free by the way with a data limit of 500 Mb. So you can use it for your own number crunching on small apps/data. http://www.splunk.com/

If you want to crunch larger numbers and data sizes then naturally one pays... ;)

This is a strong buy imho. We've been recently looking at purchasing this product which is basically a data analysis tool. It's unique selling point is that it is very versatile and functional. You can pretty much point it at any data source and extract all kinds of wonderful data.

Those in the IT industry know lots of data is collected now online and pretty much the whole globe will be digitally linked. All this data is maintained in datawarehouses of terrabyte sizes.

Using Splunk you can extract data and relationships you may not even imagined was possible. That is live data and pretty much many industries are moving towards having a dashboard that monitors daily progress as data is accumulated.

This SW allows one to see / extract exactly what is happening live as data is recorded. It is amazing. One can build all sorts of queries and ask questions that may take months to compile - but Splunk can do it for you in a matter of minutes.

One can even use it for trading if you want to link any ratios / relationships between any number of different instruments and assets in real time live.

Amazing product it really is.

Since going public this IPO has surged and came back down but holding steady above $27.

I have been watching it and placed my buy target around $30. It is currently $28.80. (PS I have already bought some for my self because I am excited about the product. Will add to lots at $30.20+ )

Anyhow - a strong buy from yours truly. (y)

Long-term hold.

I would also welcome any other tips and recommendations you may have with your reasons and so forth.

Happy trading... :)

When this goes past $30 - $40 will be in target and many people are waking up to it.

This product is well known in the industry and developer community. Name is naff imo but such is the quirky nature of developers.

Another similar company raised $65m recently called CloudEra. There is a real demand for these kinds of services with the nature of online data and real time analysis for making decisions.

I suspect we will pass $30 again very shortly. This is the IPO that FaceBook was not.

Strong buy (y)

Good idea for a thread like this and in many ways stock trading offers more opportunities than other instruments. Well done of the call :)

Thank you Paul,

And dare I say I have jumped the gun and added to position and will continue to do so in increments.

This one is getting ready to fly to all you folks out there... After $30 is breached it will quickly edge on up to previous highs I reckon.

Once again - this stock has only come to my attention because we are evaluating for internal use and it rocks. Been monitoring from $27 upwards. Recent sell off is over done.

It is a market leader with few competitors. (y)

new here - first post (also very new to trading)

This could be a dumb question -- but, looking at SPLK, why do you think there have been so many insider sells recently? Is that significant?

Just wondering -- what tools/software do most people here use for analysis?

Good thread idea Atilla!

Anyone subscribed to it might enjoy the Stan Weinstein's Stage Analysis thread too - some smart cookies on there! (Yes, T2W really does 'ave some!) This recent post and subsequent comments by 'isatrader' being a good example: Stan Weinstein's Stage Analysis

No not at all and that is a good question. (y)

When it went public many of the personnel working for the company bought large amounts of the shares and the date when they could dispose of their shares was end of last year. So they preferred to sell the shares having doubled their monies - to take the cash.

It is not because of any impending bad news.

My assessment is purely based on the many functional uses this software can be put to and the nature of the our digital age is also calling out for such software that can analyse live streaming data - in so many different ways and make decisions.

I believe British Airways is also another such company that uses something like this. It flags alarms - sends alerts for parts to be shipped whilst the aeroplane is still in their air to destination so when it lands there is no delay in delivery.

With growing storage and data what this company can deliver will be much in demand as one of the few in the market right now.

Damn... huge spike today. I was going to buy in yesterday but I decided to hold off for a price correction. Would it not be wise to buy in at this price after such a huge spike? Should we expect a correction by Monday? I'm looking for a short/mid term position, and not talking about a lot of money here.

I have been tracking this from the lows of $27 around mid-Dec and in the 4H charts you can see it made a higher low at $28. So don't blame you for being cautious and watching it really. I'm the same. Start of sceptical and do own research. My thoughts were;

On the 8th January you can clearly see another pin bar at a higher high.

To be honest I was waiting originally until $30 was breached but product sells it self. If we (anon Global Bank) can see potential in it I'm sure many others will too. And not just Banks, many other industries too.

This is long term for me. Target is $38 for starters. With full on recovery I wouldn't be surprised if it hits $70 but I don't want to run away with my self.

Licensing is based on data size. Larger data crunched bigger the license fee. Fits well with business as data grows so will fees.

Your judgement call on when to go in but I suspect some retrace and test of support is probably likely perhaps to 3040s somewhere.

Good luck (y)

Splunk Gains on Speculation IBM May Consider Takeover - Bloomberg

SPLK:US 32.2700 USD 2.5000 8.40% As of 20:10:00 ET on 01/11/2013.

Keep buying in light of this piece of news/rumour???

There are many providers of storage hardware & db software, who would be looking at this product.

Addenda: For example one of the developers of this company told me that one report they were asked to produce was to look at usage of lifts in a big tall skyscraper. They wanted to gauge business activity and input findings into lease renewal negotiations.

As mentioned before the amount of data companies have is vast. This was supposed to be a unique selling point for FaceBook FB with billions of online users. However, translating data into human behaviour and cash is another matter and this is where SPLK fits in.

Watch CloudEra too as sooner or later that too will come to market - another IPO in the making.

SPL (LSE) has no connection with SPLK - the epic just happens to share three letters. But possibly worth a look. It's the London epic for Skil Ports & Logistics - a stock whose share price has headed down and down and down ever since it came to market - from 250p to near 100p - but whose frustrations (awaiting planning approvals, environmental approvals, etc, etc, for construction of a new shipping port near Mumbai) are apparently over (see announcement yesterday evening). They appear to have sufficient funding arrangements in place to now proceed quickly with construction. They are a team who have done it profitably before. Website is SKILPL

Not sure what to say or think of that NVP but thank you :)

Do you have any gems in your portfolio that you have high expectations from?

Well the chart today 15% jump certainly supports what you say. Good tip. (y)

SPL:London Stock Quote - SKIL Ports & Logistics Ltd - Bloomberg

What is your target price and what time period do you foresee PP. I know its a big ask but just your guestimate will do.

I don't have a particular distant target. In fact I already took some part profit today. My guess is that when the selected contractor is announced, the company broker will take the opportunity to issue some kind of guidance note, and that the share price will move up when that happens (next week maybe?). Between now and then, I imagine either (a) another few traders will take profits and price may drift back a few pence, or (b) some media coverage will occur which prompts further interest in a stock which very few know about - and if folk start buying in, even in smallish amounts, the price may get pushed up quite easily (very few shares available in free float). I would not be surprised to see it over £1 a share this year sometime.

Hi Guys,

New tip from yours trully. Buy Blackberry - Research In Motion Ltd

BBRY:NASDAQ GS Stock Chart - Research In Motion Ltd - Bloomberg

Current Price = 1620 USD

I feel their new BlackBerry 10 device is going to maintain its position and win some others over from the stale Apple and new Samsung devices.

This is a product which major blue chip global enterprises currently use and I see no need to change.

Devil you know is better than the one you don't.

imho Buy now before expected March release in the US. (y)

Thanks! It jumped 8.46% already today ($16.24 currently)! I have such a hard time pulling the trigger after such a sharp increase. Would you expect it to settle back down to the ~$15 range in the near future? Also, whats your target price?

I ended up waiting forever for Splunk to come back down, and am afraid I missed my opportunity to get in at a great price. Is your target price still around $40?

You can also look at all that money that is getting puked out of Apple. Investors will want to put it somewhere, probably another tech company. If RIMM starts climbing that money may "pile on" and give a nice boost.

Re: RIM if you check the charts they have fallen considerably because of all the bad news last year. So they have definitely been oversold imo. I couldn't believe the fall after original presentation. :-0 FaceBook comes out with a lot of BS rubbish and flies and BB accepted widely used device gets a hammering. More money to be made by us I guess.

We at work use BB and along with many other blue chips. So I doubt the move away from accepted leading technology to tablets or iphones will take place in the near term. Most will wait to see BB10 (no idea why they've called it the Z10???)

So I'm expecting $30 for starters especially when they go on sale in the US.

Re: Splunk - yes I think it has some way to go. What they have is new technology and is not widely used as yet in a very big and growing storage industry.

Finally - these shares are for medium to long term imo. But you know always do your own research and buy according to your risk / reward appetite etc. Past performance is no indicator of future gains :whistling

I'll ask Isatrader to work one of his analysis on RIMM too on the Stan Weinstein's Stage Analysis thread.
