Now that I've decided to make another attempt at trading not one single person close to me thinks I can pull it off. They all think I'm crazy because of my failures before. Everyone says to me that nobody makes a day training. They really don't know what they're talking about.

I am 49 years old and wish I didn't care. But it would be nice to have people support it. I guess it doesn't matter.

Who else had experienced this?

I would love to hear success stories how you became a trader. Especially if you have made it full time.

I had similar concerns when I started trading and for that reason, I didn't tell anyone what I was doing. I thought that it would just add to the pressure. Rightly or wrongly I thought people would assume I was either bragging, bullsh1tting or daydreaming. Anyway best of luck, only time will tell whether you make it.

Do not talk about it and be secretive
Control risk carefully
Use a sound model to time the market
Avoid discussing your model
Avoid trend following in any timeframe
Let winners run but not for long
Use stops and risk no more than 3% of bankroll

Good luck.

What's the problem with trend following?

I was under the impression that simple trend-following systems (on various timeframes) are one of the ways that retail traders can get an edge.

So I am also interested to hear the reason for the suggestion to avoid trend-following strategies.

Waiting anxiously.... :)

Hi Jdesey,
Welcome to T2W.

Unfortunately, your family and friends are more right than they are wrong, as very few day traders make consistent gains. That's not to say you can't - I don't know you obviously - so it's not for me to say. But, if you've been at this a while and you're struggling to make any headway, you're degree of 'craziness' will be determined by how much your efforts impact your wealth, health and happiness - along with that of your family. If it's a hobby that you enjoy and doesn't negatively affect anyone else, then you can keep chippin' away at it ad infinitum. On the other hand . . .

I agree with what others have said. IMO, it's best to play your cards close to your chest. Only talk about it with fellow traders or people who are really interested. People who don't understand what it's all about (which includes large numbers of those attempting to practice it), don't understand.

Who else had experienced this?
Yeah, years ago. Nowadays, I follow my own advice and don't discuss it - other than in very, very general terms. People assume that traders do one of two things: they either blow up their accounts owing millions, or they make millions every day. It's black and white in their eyes, there's nothing in between.

I would love to hear success stories how you became a trader. Especially if you have made it full time.
Members rarely ever give details about their success - or lack thereof - as it tends to attract the wrong sort of attention. That said, spend some time here and you'll get a feel for the ones who probably do okay (you're unlikely to ever know for sure) as opposed to those who talk a good talk but can't walk the walk. And if you're in any doubt, always assume they fall into the latter camp and not the former!
Tim.

before anything else must watch this must get your mind right :cheesy:

If it is what you want to do, keep trying until you find a method to make it work.
Hang in there.....

Your advice against trend-following is still on my mind. Other posts from you have been on the mark. But surely you can't advise jdesey to trade -<against>- the trend?

Actually, I might agree with you partially - if I'm looking to get long in an uptrend, I do buy on a down day. so I am buying as price is falling in a minor downtrend - though I'm only a buyer when price has been rising strongly and consistently in the major uptrend.

Some can make trend following work others can't.

Make sure you keep your day job and are on demo until consistently profitable.

Age doesn't matter, there are many traders older than you including myself. People's opinions are usually generated through lack of knowledge in regards to what you're doing.

However, don't just jump in! Practice on a demo account and perform all the back testing needed to acquire a good system you feel comfortable with. Most traders make the same mistakes, they chase and fail to admit they made a bad trade.

Short losses, solid gains. Don't watch your mistake all day hoping on a change.
Good Luck.

if you REALLY want this...

you better be ready to spend a LOT of time on this.

all day, nights, weekends, afterhours
