Why Murray CAN'T Win Wimbledon

As everyone on T2W is a professional trader (well, in attitude if not literally) - no one reading this will be taking wild punts on the chances of Andy Murray winning Wimbledon. Will you? However, just in case you are thinking along such lines - here's my view as to why he can't win the championship. Note that I use the word 'can't' and not 'won't'. The reason has nothing to do with his tennis skills, which are clearly right up there with the very best of 'em. No, the reason he can't win is because he's the achetypal dour Scot. I've seen three interviews with him in as many days and he's not smiled once. Not once! What's wrong with the man? He's doing well, he's an international sporting celebrity at the peak of his powers and on the front pages of every rag in the land. Surely he could manage just one small grin for his legion of fans? No, he can't - he doesn't 'do' smiling, like some of us don't 'do' hard drugs. Alright then, most of us. His managers and PR people have probably told him not to smile for fear of being ridiculed like Gordon Brown was when he tried it a few weeks ago. He sure as hell doesn't want to upstage the PM in the weirdo stakes. Anyway, where was I, oh yes, the reason he can't win Wimbledon is that would mean he'd have to smile as it's not humanly possible to win a tournament like Wimbledon and not do so. That really would be weirder than a very weird weird thing. So much so in fact that men in white coats would be called to escort him off centre court. All of which puts poor young Andy between a rock and a hard place. The only way out of this predicament is to lose against a worthy opponent. That way he doesn't have to smile and the national (British) psyche is satisfied as, ultimately, we prefer losers to winners. Being runner-up to Roger Federer in the final would be ideal.

What struck me about him was the number of times he sticks, "you know" into his interviews. He is not happy with public speaking and at a loss for words, like a lot of footballers who are interviewed after a game. I suppose that we should be thankful that they are good at what they do and forgive them their uninteresting comments after the match.

I can't get exited about Wimbledon because even the British tennis sport/industry doesn't take it seriously. If they took it seriously we WOULD have had a Gentlemen's Singles winner since Fred Perry in 1936. Actually, that final win by Fred Perry was a blip, British domination of this competition having ended in 1912: up to that year we always had a male player in the final.

There is no geographic / climatic / demographic / economic / biological / genetic reason why a country like ours can't produce a champion for this event. I can only therefore put it down to the British organisation of the sport itself. I don't know what's wrong with them, but they certainly don't seem able to correct it.

Dunblane massacare 1996

On a serious note it should be considered that Andy Murray was a pupil at Dunblane Primary School on the day a madman arrived armed with hanguns and shot and killed sixteen of Andy's school chums and one teacher before turning the gun on himself.

Who knows how or if that incident has affected his 'demeanor' but one thing for sure is that the lad is a role model to many young tennis hopeful's and we never see any tabloid pics of him having nightclub blowouts or other pathetic attention seeking behaviour. Andy has pushed himself to become Britain's no1 tennis player and the world number 3. No easy feat given the 'baggage' he might be carrying.

As for his anti Engrish rant: That was taken out of context after a bit of banter between some English pals. I would love it if England won the next World Cup, I'm getting tired of watching that old 'ufo quality' footage from '66 plus Scotland would get to come down to Wembly the year after, and erm.... History repeats?
