'Evil Knievil', explains how to win at spread betting

Black Swan

On a scale of one to ten this gets a minus one; hope he's pleased/proud with the 'job' the Telegraph have done on him..hardly an explanation of how to win, more a definiton on how not to trade (any markets with any of his 'methods') IMHO...

Day traders: Simon Cawkwell, aka 'Evil Knievil', explains how to win at spread betting

The self-confessed compulsive gambler admits that its lure is making money from the financial markets free of tax, although these days he claims the intellectual stimulation is more important the riches.

Most of Mr Cawkwell's research is done on the internet and by speaking to people on the phone all day. Reading the newspapers, studying each company, arming yourself with a good instinct and nurturing an appetite for risk will also increase the chances of doing well.

But becoming a full-time professional takes complete dedication. In a rare burst of modesty, Mr Cawkwell pointed out that he might be the most famous proponent of spread betting, but there were hundreds of worthy gamblers who can give him a run for his money.

"People keep on publishing the fact that I'm successful," he said. "But there are plenty of other people around that make plenty of money." Most of the stocks he looks at closely are apparently not members of the FTSE Index, but smaller company shares that are more volatile and less well researched.

I bet the likes of IG and CMC are licking their lips at this article, and readying themselves for the sudden influx of middle-class chumps about to donate them a chunk of their savings.

Yep, the only thing missing was "he deals through worldspreads"...etc...

Never heard of the guy.

He rich from trading or what.

Or just a salaried front performer of the industry drumming up some dumb money with unsubstantiated hype.

Ex accountant who's made quite a bit from shorting stuff, did a lot around the end of the dotcom boom when everything was dropping, i think he gives quite a lot of what he makes back though.

Ah ok thanks mate :)

Looks like a diet might be a good idea for him too tho.

Live longer and all that, have more time having fun shorting.

money makes money as they say. he comes from a very wealthy family and had a lot to start with....

The toy I never got as a boy, I got some cheap Woolies version...:(

You know what i mean and its Evel Knievel
No that's the chap on the motorbike. This is Evil, as in bad, feared; from his reputation to aggressively short stocks.
Some strange comments from posters. Do I detect jealosy, inverted snobbery etc.? It takes all sorts to make a market, live & let live.

I have only met him once and thought he was intelligent/well educated, had original thought and a likeable guy (my wife says I am a bad judge of character). One story is that most of his proits from shorting went into smaller mining stocks, where he lost heavily. But with all city folk like him, you never exactly know what his current positions are. By the time it is reported he is short in a stock he has probably closed the position.

I doubt it, i'll guess mine and Raysors comments are more from remembering about him during the late 90.s early 00's dotcom boom etc
