UK House price charts?

Does anyone know where to get hold of UK House price charts, or a stock that reflects it?
I wanna do some tech analysis using candlestick charts with MA's etc

Sorry....no I don't, but it sounds like an interesting idea. I thought about trying to find a house price chart the other week!

You can download an excel spreadsheet from the HBOS website that goes back 20 years, then make your own charts.

It's the Halifax index rather than actual land registry data, but over the long term they should average out just the same.

Rightmove publish their own index of prices called the Rightmove index (strangely enough!) which they claim is "...the leading house price indicator, compiled from the largest monthly sample of residential property prices."

The June edition just came out today and headlines with "The first falls in house prices this year", you can read it here: http://www.rightmove.co.uk/pdf/p/hpi/HousePriceIndex21June2004.pdf

It made the news headlines on Virgin Radio this afternoon, that's how I came across it.

It contains a few charts, but their basic line and bar charts. Not really the sort you can do much TA on.

Also look at the following link that offers some form of bar charts by towns, counties etc...and is reasonably accurate I must say... saw a property in St Austel in Cornwall and it does match..the Cornwall property prices...

This is the site I have followed for many years now....good luck..

Cheers for your ideas. It's not exactly what i was looking for, but it's a good start. I looked at the HBOS info, but couldn't get a graph out of it. (had brain-ache after about 15mins!!!)
Rightmove is pretty informative. Ta very much.
If at first you don't succeed.....
cheat...

Thanks zambuck, I've been searching for decent property charts and info. for some time, this web site is pretty good especially as a tool for hedging against property prices locking in profits etc.

Chart

I had a look at the HBOS data, got a chart if anyone's interested.

This is an interesting project. I would also appreciate Volume analysis with the candles.

Post any progress you have made.

I tried this research about a year ago during house purchase in order to detect trends for some different areas. I used Nationwide data and Land Registry data - both free. The main problem was not being able to get enough detailed data, but it was perfectly possible to construct some meaningful MAs. [I used displaced channels / envelope]. I was able to confirm what common sense was telling me - that prices were topping out. (or were my findings lucky coincidence?)

I do know that more detailed Registry data is now available on a paid-for basis but their free stuff is aslo very good if you have the patience to navigate their website. Do remember also that although the Registry data is delayed, it is the only one that is accurately meaningful (and even that is not without fault - the "price paid" notified to the Registry and appearing on the property register is not necessarily the actual price paid: eg there are some very "interesting" deals done with discounts on new-build buy to let flats).

Hope you are successful in this project - do publish your results.

Nationwide House Price Data

Hi

I've downloaded the Nationwide, inflation adjusted house prices and exported to excel. Have made a price vs time chart with a fair value trend line. Click chart1 tab for the chart once file has opened.

Data downloaded from here:

House Prices - Data Download

Hope you find it useful.

Just a quick update for the Q3 2008 figures - the chart is starting to look a bit scary.

Apologies to those that were following these - I forgot to upload the updated data because of Xmas and New Year distractions. Anyway, here's the latest figures courtesy of Nationwide.

Interested to see but got virus alert and cancelled opening?

Hmm, strange - there's no macros running on it. Not sure why your anti virus would flag this. Does it do the same for the previous files I uploaded?
