The Good the Bad & the Ugly - who are they?

Those who've been around here for some time get to know who's worth listening to & vice-versa. However, it's not so simple for new guys and the casual visitor. I'd find it useful to see who's got form on a long-term basis.

The old "Rep" system failed to achieve its aim so I'd like to propose a rating system based on the one used for Articles. What I'd find useful is:

1. A rating of any particular post.
2. An overall (ie cumulative) rating of any particular poster - this could be summed from their individual post ratings.

Articles can be positive rated 1-10 which infers they are at least worth a read. With posts this is not always the case and I would suggest a rating scale from +10 to -10.

Obviously this will strain Sharky's database etc etc but hey! with 200k members you've got to provide the best. I would hope that the numbers would stack up in the long term and be a decent guide.

An interesting idea. Tough to avoid MAD (Mutual Assured Destruction) with antagonists. We'll See.

Ironically, it was the misuse of positive mutual repping that was the demise of the original rep system.
It was abandoned.

The idea that people can join and immediately know who's worth reading or avoiding reminds me of indicators where you don't need to learn anything, don't need to work hard, and everything will be handed to you on a plate.

Truth is, newbies just need to spend time getting to know the site, and get a feel for who to listen to, and gravitate towards.
And make up their own minds.

I would not have guessed that.

What about a panel consisting of those who have obtained respect for competence and ability to communicate?

Yeh I remeber this guy who got stars and legendary status yet knew nothing about trading. He was very lulzy and entertaining though.

lulzy - another word I came across on this forum that I had to look up. You guys are doing wonders for my vocabulary.

Another benefit of a blue ribbon panel is it might cause people who aspire to a good reputation to take more care and be more helpful in their postings. And those without such aspirations will be more easily dismissed as irrelevant.

An internet forum as a meritocracy. An interesting concept, that.

Nobody who makes a decent return from their trading cares a jot about their reputation on any forum.

We have a defacto blue-ribbon panel in the form of Mods and Forum Guides.

That is simply not my experience with respect to successful people that I've met. I fail to see why forum posters or traders should be different.

Moderators have a thankless job. No matter what action they take, someone will be unhappy. And they are mostly reactive.

What I am suggesting is a proactive mechanism. There is a big difference between someone's response to a reprimand and their response to not being picked for recognition.

I think most, if not all, of us here would fall into the "ugly" category.

Speak for yourself mate. I never really post pictures of myself online but you're going too far.

Here's one my GF took when I was in Jamaica last year

I posted a link to the TV segment a local station about my workstation. There is no hiding what I look like. There is no bluffing that I could model anything.

And so it goes.
