MSN hotmail problem

Hi

when I log into my hotmail account - after a minute or so the screen freezes - and i get the message saying that this program is not responding. This has been happening for a week or so. I have to close the window.

Hotmail recently increased the inbox capacity from 2mb to 250mb - therefore the problems seem to coincide with the upgrade. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? if yes, has it been resolved?

What OS do you use? I have had problems in the past with 98 and Msn Messenger, as when you login to hotmail it triggers a wake up call for msn messenger. I had to uninstall msn messenger as it was the problem. But if you use xp not sure that this will apply as it has its own version of messenger.

Hi Jtrader,
If u have Outlook Express, u could always just download ur hotmail from there. Much easier (imho) to download/read/reply/manage from OE.

I thought that it could be a virus - but have scanned for viruses twice and there aren't any.

Yes, I've also had this problem mainly since they gave my account the free 250MB upgrade. It's very annoying and have come to the conclusion that it's something to do with their server for that account, as I can still access other Hotmail accounts (2MB ones) when my main one is unaccessible.

Mind you, it could be something to do with IE security updates... but I'm speculating wildly now!

You can use Outlook (hate this program!) to attempt to download any new messages although the other day not even Outlook could access my account!

Go figure!

My version of XP Home is up-to-date apart from SP2.

I like the fact that hotmail is now 250mb. Also like how they've increased the number of email addresses that can be blocked, it was previously 200. Also, like how (I think) junk mail is blocked automatically - when it is deleted. You do not have to block the junk email address seperately.
Just need to be able to access it now!

The idea of downloading email from hotmail to Outlook Express is a good one. Unfortunately I am not presently the sole user of my PC or hotmail - so this is not feasible at present. I am aware that multiple person access to a trading PC is not a good idea - if you want to avoid the possibility of additional problems - and is something that will not go on for long!

Hi again. Yes, my PC is also all up-to-date apart from SP2 (need a BIOS update or installation will kill my PC apparently!). I do spyware/trojan/virus scans every week and with the amount of screen time I'm doing right now, would know quickly if anything untoward was infecting my machine.

So.....must be a MSN problem. Right?! One thing I did wonder about was whether my extensive HOSTS list, which has a massive number of dodgy websites to block, is causing some adverts in Hotmail to not load and that is what is causing the page lock-ups.

Anyway, if it continues I'll just start using my Yahoo or GMAIL accounts more.....

Re: Outlook Express. I think there is a way of setting an "Identity" and password so that only you can access your downloaded emails; good for shared machines. Nevertheless, it's still an unstable program and with a slow connection it takes too long to download large mailboxes.

FWIW, downloading Hotmail to Outlook will shortly become unavailable - MS have said that they are discontinuing this feature as an anti-spammer measure

I access a number of Hotmail accounts through Outlook Express, Mailwasher and directly. I also use MyWay without all the frills they offer. http://home.myway.com/
I'm running XPHome with SP2. Maybe you need SP2.
Bluewave, how does the bios affect SP2 installation? I haven't heard of that one.

jtrader - similar problem here. i just close hotmail down then log back in. only started recently. don't think it is linked to extra capacityas I have had this higher capacity for some time now.

May I refer you to the thread about SP2, here.

To quote Microsoft:

My hotmail account is still freezing - this is becoming a real problem now - as I cannot access the inbox and try to reply to important email - for more than about 30 seconds before it freezes. Hope Microsoft get this sorted soon.

Are people having problems with MSN Messenger too????

My usual log in email wont work , but can get into MSN with an alternative login

Cant see any info on MSN website though

Might be clutching at straws here, but recently I changed a setting on my XP (home) built-in Firewall and haven't had the Hotmail problem since. Possibly unrelated but will tell you what I changed anyway:

Go to XP's firewall advanced > settings, and now put tick next to:

-> Internet Mail Access Protocol Version 3 (IMAP3)
-> Internet Mail Access Protocol Version 4 (IMAP4)
-> Internet Mail Server (SMTP)

Click OK twice and try it for a few weeks. If it makes no difference you can always change it back!
