Medium-term Stock Spread Betting Journal

Hi leonarda been reading with interest, thanks for posting,

For info I record all my trades in terms of Risk Reward Profit units. ie my risk on entry
(entry - stop + spread) = -1RRP unit, therefore every trade starts life as a -1.0RRP.

Every time I scale out or move stop I then bank a proportion of RRP. This way all my wins and losses are recorded as a proportion of original risk. this takes the stock size out of the equation (I find % moves can be extremely misleading with SB)

Probably stating the obvious here, but I thought it might be of interest to you as you mention your reason for measuring stock % moves in preparation for the future when your account has grown sufficiently (y)

Using RRP method is a consistent measure whatever your account size, as the only variable then becomes what % of your account equates to 1RRP.

For instance 2.5% now might reduce to 1% in future but the returns expressed as RRP are still the same in terms of account growth vs risk if that makes sense

I'll stop rambling  good trading :clover:
Cheers

hi thanks for the suggestion, yes makes sense. However, I like to keep mine simple and in terms that I relate to easily. I like to judge my trading edge/performance historically purely based on each position %tage gain/loss, and that will remain the same regardless of leverage/account changes in the future. I then judge my account performance separately, ie.my annual account return and drawdown. It's just simple terms that I can relate to personally.
One thing I should mention is my account "risk" per trade is not constant like many books suggest, ie. books suggest work out technical stop, then work out bet size so that that amount is what your defined risk level (eg.2% of account). Instead I work out bet size purely based on stock price and a position size equivalent of £600. So this is regardless of where the stop is, if the stop is too far away I wouldn't take the trade. So my "risk" varies from say 2% to 3% of account. My reasoning for this is just because my technical stop is further away, I don't want to reduce my possible gain, as long as the reward/risk ratio is good i'm happy, and the law of averages mean it's roughly the same account risk "on average". Again it's just a keeping it simple attitude...

An up and down week, not entering any new trades until market makes its mind up, probably wait for a pullback before entering anything new.
Off on holiday next week, so account in the trusty hands of the IG automated trailing stop...! I've set a few Buy Limit Orders for some possible pullback buys, but doubt they'll get triggered.

Well AGK.L was a bit of a star buy up 8.7% and climbing thanks to good earnings, overall having a great week thus far, account up to £1320 or +32% YTD.

Current Positions

A fab week, +17% on account for the week! lets hope I don't give too much back next week...!
The FTSE is really struggling to breakout of the range it has been in YTD, unlike the Dow/SP500. The FTSE is up a mere +2% YTD compared to the Dow's +9.5%, but hey the UK's GDP growth is fairly flat compared to the US.
The key to my swing/position trading is to not lose too much while the FTSE is ranging and let those winners run big time when it trends higher, so given the FTSE is pretty much flat YTD i'm fairly happy where I am.
