After watching democracy at work in the Brexit shambles then the question MUST be asked - is it over ?
Has democracy had it's day ?
It can no longer deliver results when the usual parties like the Socialists and SNP won't abide by the rules of the game.
The referendum gave a clear and decisive result, albeit by a small majority.
Those that disagreed should have changed their losing opinions or resigned for being out of touch.

“The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.”

sorry - not too sure on that one P......

how can any decision based on a 48%/52% vote be ever clear and decisive ?

seriously ?

the reason we are in this almighty mess is the split and MARGINAL decision made in a voting process that should have always been predecated with a more meaningful vote once all the key details and facts were available....

Not this shambolic stagger over the last 3 years

we have more chance of winning the bloody eurovision song contest than now delivering an informed and intelligent outcome to the Brexit saga..... flawed from Day one....

It is sad for me really.
All the great work done in the past to save us from despotic rulers has come to this.
Where do we go from here ?
MPs think of themselves as prima donnas with all the answers when in fact the ratbags should be SERVING the PEOPLE.
Maybe the indicative vote can come up with something.

Good points NVP.
IF MPs were half as intelligent as they think they are and knew the meaning of democracy and discipline there would be a lot less of a problem.
Woooooooooooo Hoooooooooooooooo I have " a cunning plan "to finally win Eurovision !
Better not tell though.

unfortunately with the PM halfway out the door i fear the voting process will degrade into a bartering game for the new tory leader candidates......at least for the tories anyway

and for the Labourites it should be the chance to push for a General election at all costs.....power before the greater good of the UK people

im beyond caring about what i voted originally......I just want an outcome ....they have won in that respect

We’ve got who we voted for :p. Our democracy is representative so we vote in people to make decisions on our behalf broadly, but not exclusively, in line with the manifesto they put before us. Once in their job is to act in what they consider to be the best interest of the country as a whole as represented by ALL their constituents and not just those who voted for them. In general, they follow their party’s lead but they are not bound to do so.

What’s happening at the moment is a crisis of conscience for many MPs as they find themselves struggling to match their determination of what’s best for the country with their party’s Government lead and with the majority view of their constituents.

You could well argue that the chaos is proof positive that our democracy is alive and well otherwise they would just slavishly follow the government willy nilly.

I think that's a reasonably balanced view. It's also important not to confuse democracy with incompetence, deceit and lack of integrity – I'm pretty sure that some MPs have veered towards these 3 undesirable areas. As for the health status of democracy: it's not dead but is suffering from a rather severe bout of flu and is taking rather longer to get things done than normal. Recovery will come about eventually!

I remember a clown gave the others in Italy, in their Presidential election a good run for their money.
A clown is currently heading the run off vote in the Ukraine.
Perhaps likely to be LESS oppressive than most ?

agreed.....very few politicians are dumb.....any decisions we mere mortals observe as incompetent, deceitful , dumb or misinformed (in our opinions) are far from it if we knew the true political Machiavellian twists and turns that were steering those "dumb" decisions

Ronald Reagan didn't do so badly.
He just let the experts get on with it.

Rubbish.

Your comprehension of democracy is well and truly naff and OT. You are another tyrant in the making.

Reason why there is no majority in parliament is precisely because it represents the split vote of the people in reality.

Don't forget after the referendum an election was held. MPs should be allowed to their work.

I think the way Eurosceptics and Brexiteers are conducting themselves, is bordering on contempt of parliament and criminal activity.

If not for Parliament or Gina Miller these Eurosceptic hooligans would abuse our democracy to ignore half the will of the people and do whatever they choose.

You need to respect our institutions and Parliament which people have died for.

Criminals? That's a bit of a one-sided view isn't it? Would you care to explain what criminal activity they have "bordered on"?

I would take the editors of that paper to court over that headline.

Democracy is all about the will of the people taking priority.
It used to be the will of the King. Then Parliament rebelled successfully in the Civil War.
And now THE People have the ultimate say in what's what in this country.

Some of the losers just can't accept this. They think they know better.
So the rest of us have to put up with their whining and wingeing. Some are even demanding another referendum ! And probably another and another until they get the result they want.
Go cry in yer pillows losers and get over it.

Parliament represents the will of the people.

AND for the 100th time the referendum is for advisory guidance for Parliament to act on as it sees fit.

Referendum is not law. What Cameron or Osborne said is not law either. Politicians promise stuff they can't deliver all the time.

Get a grip on reality before you try and shut half the population up with another 25% deceived into voting for something that can not be delivered.

You need to learn to deal with democracy and that's through Parliament. Don't try and shut Parliament up.

Age is no guarantee of wisdom that's clear to see.
