I am considering buying a laptop for my trading. It should have powerful wireless networking capabilities and 1 gig memory. I really donot need cdr or dvdr . Reasonable price. Any suggestions much appreciated. Thanks

Yeh I'd go along with Sharky on that one. Especially DABS.com. I've always had good service prompt delivery and they've a very good range, an......d very difficult to beat on price.

QED

Hi folks, anyone any experience, good or bad with Acer laptops, am thinking of upgrading my laptop, have always had IBM Thinkpads, but now they have sold that business to Lenovo am not sure I want to stay with them.
Or if anyone has recently bought a laptop that they are extremely impressed with, or have views on ones to avoid, I would be equally interested.
Thanx

Hi roguetrader,

I just purchased a Toshiba Tecra M2 from www.cheap-it.com for 750 and it works like a dream. I use it purely for trading and couldn't have hoped for a better machine. I normally go with IBM's and I did look at the T42p thinkpad but the price was far too steep for what it was.

Here's the Toshiba spec.

PM 1.6 Centrino Processor.
512Mb DDR RAM.
40Gb Hard Disk Drive.
14.1” XGA TFT Colour Screen.
DVD/CD-ReWriter Combo Drive (DVD Reader & CD Burner).
nVidia GeForce FX Go5200 64Mb Graphics Card.
56K V.90 Modem, Wireless LAN, 2x USB 2.0 Port.
Fast InfraRed.
Firewire.
S-Video TV Out.
Windows XP Pro Operating System.
lightweight magnesium alloy casing.
Massive 4hrs battery life.
Toshiba 12-Month Warranty.

I trade using a laptop.

previously i used a HP , great support and service.

I upgraded to a ACER in july this year and in the first month the motherboard failed
terrible service ,was away being fixed for over a month and finally got it back after
phoning 40 something times.

I know of 3 other people who have had similar problems,
hence to say im going back to HP next year.

wasp and pcj, thanx a lot for taking the time to reply and share your experiences. I appreciate it.

I run an HP 15" with a similar spec, bat life 5 hours and total weight 2.2kg ( most important
when travelling)
I also tilt the machine slightly to improve airflow.
It is a great machine used for trading while my other machine is used for web things ie T2W

I've had good results from Misco (and 'Simply' before that - they merged or bought them out or whatever) - you can see some nice deals on
http://www.misco.co.uk/categories/~1262~/Laptops / Notebooks.htm

Whilst Dell on
http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/notebooks?c=uk&cs=ukbsdt1&l=en&s=bsd
are always worth a look. I find the Dell site a bit annoying at times, you can have a leaflet/advert in your hand, go to their site to configure an identical package, and end up with something at a different price.... but if you persevere you can get a nice machine at a nice price. Whilst cost isn't the overrriding concern, it does mean that for a bit less you get more than you might.... just watch the silly priced warranties and so on!
