Vendors as Advisors

Though I'm loathe to stir up any pots, isn't it somewhat inappropriate for vendors to act as "advisors"? Unless, of course, the thrust of the site has changed.

Vendor is a catch all tag for anyone with the slightlest commercial interest. As you know it doesn't necessarily mean there here of these boards to sell their wares. If like yourself, for the purposes of transparency, you have the vendor tag - I don't think anyone would argue you're hear wearing that hat.

Obviously any member, vendor or not, would need to be judged as to whether it was appropriate for them to take on a role, and whether they were suitable for that role. Certainly I find it unlikely that someone who has a purely commercial motivation for posting would ever fit the bill. I don't think having an arbitrary your a vendor, or you've only post x, or you have a rep of whatever is the correct approach, discretion on our part as to who would be a useful asset, isn't all that difficult. In some ways it would be useful to have a representative of someone with a commercial interest, to offer their views/opnion on how the site can best support the different types of members that use it.

Why?
As has already been established, there are vendors and there are vendors. Assuming you are referring to the two latest additions to the 'Advisor' team, then personally, I have no qualms whatsoever in welcoming both of them. They each have respective skills, qualifications and highly relevant experience that will prove to be invaluable to the membership. In fact, bucket loads more of it than I've got to offer. They are both excellent appointments and I am privileged to count them as my colleagues. If you genuinely want the site to improve and think you have good ideas to help achieve that goal - and I don't doubt that you do - then why not contribute via the appropriate channels? And, on the occasions when you do just that, sometimes your ideas fall on stony ground. Hey, welcome to the club of life, **** happens, get over it! Yes, you are a a highly valued member dbp whose contribution to the site has been and, hopefully, will continue to be immeasurable (and I'm speaking personally when I say that), however, this doesn't give you 'carte blanche' to ride rough shod over everyone else and throw your toys out of the pram until you get your own way.

DBP if you're questioning whether Math and Statopt should be advisors, I'll stick my neck out and vouch that I've had contact with JJ and Greg since 2002 via the TradeStationWorld forums, and in my experience of their extensive posting history there I have never seen them overtly or covertly plug their own interests.

I have the utmost respect for the knowledge imparted by these guys, and I have no doubts about the fact that they are traders of a calibre that can only benefit the membership here at T2W should they participate meaningfully, an opinion I share of yourself too.

I might add to that, that Mathemagician came forward himself to volunteer as an advisor, following a post of mine that was a direct reply to dbphoenix' critic note about advisors in the 'Vendor Performance Thread':

It would be wrong concluding something based upon what wasp or I said. After all, no one said there's always a consensus amongst us. If anyone feels their comments or suggestions aren't properly translated or represented by those of the advisors, he or she is always free to step forward and join the "advisors", or open up new feedback threads.

Ironic, isn't it?
