Upgrade XP Home->Pro

howdy folks,

im thinking of using x trader and it needs xp pro but my pc only has xp home.

can i upgrade or do i have to buy a xp pro license and re-install the os??

You need to purchase XP Pro media and licence.

Boot up from the CD and you can take the option to upgrade to XP Pro rather that a fresh install.

This will take a few hours. After this you will have to Service Pack and Windows Update the machine.

I would allow around 3 to 4 hours if you have broadband.

cheers - guess i have to save all my data and reload it on again afterwards.....

i would have thought that all the service packs etc would come with the cd.

When I tried on two separate occasions to upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro I was unable to get many applications fully working. In both cases I had to do a completely clean install and then upgrade immediately and then further upgrade via Windows update. When I did this everything on both occasions worked fine.

Doing an inplace upgrade doesn't trash your data!

I would back it up beforehand though to make sure.

I have carried out about 10 of these upgrades without any major problems,
