Whats the point? you can only earn a few k tax free in an isa so why not just trade your funds properly?

Not the place for this discussion actually lol.

Depends whether you call 20k a few k tax free. I'd rather not pay tax on those sorts of amounts, and of course build up a bigger fund and more potential for tax free gains.
 
I guess the products that allow shorting in ISAs have wider spreads / higher costs.

Yes, I think the spreads are generally quite wide on mnay ETFs. I don't think I'd be in and out in days - weeks or months fine. But going long oil at 40 dollars and holding wasn't a difficult decision. If it'd gone down a bit, it is leveraged, but as long as it's not too much, it's still a long term hold. Same goes for gold. I have an ETF global nuclear fund in it too.
