Hi

i have a word document that I created and now cannot open. I cannot move it from its current location and i cannot copy it.

When I do open it, the blank word screen - without the white page appears. I then try to open it by using file - open - in Word, and i get this error message -

"The full path of the file '......................................................................' is too long. Please try using the 'Map Network Drive' command to connect to the server to shorten the path.

I do not know what the 'Map Network Drive' is or how it is located. Can anybody advise me of how I can best set about opening the document.

rename it to something shorter using explorer such as a.doc

Trying to rename the document in Windows Explorer made no difference. The problem i still encounter is - when i right click on the document, the option to rename it isn't available as it is with my other word documents. The option available when i right click on it are -

Open
New
Print
Open with.......
Send to

You could try highlighting the file and pressing F2.

highlighting other files and pressing F2 does allow me to rename the file. However, with the file in question it does nothing!

Also, how do i find out/display the extension type of the file? Is it possible to do this so that i'll see this when i open the folder the file is in? of so, under what heading?

the file is quite private.

I found another version of it that i'd copied to CD. This version opened fine and do then i copied back to my hard drive.

The only thing now is that I also cannot delete the damaged file.

Oh well, not to worry too much.

A bit late but hopefully it will at least let you delete the file:

If you're running XP you could try the following, I am assuming you're loading the file from a network computer from the original error message - if you're not then... your only recourse would be to rename some of the directories to shorter names, transfer the files, and then rename the directories back.

if you're connecting to a network computer you'll havae something like:
\\my-computer\c\...\my files\a.doc
\\192.168.0.1\c\...\my files\a.doc

Click on the windows key
Click on "Run..."

type the first bit of the file path from above eg
\\my-computer\
or
\\192.168.0.1
and press ENTER

you'll get a list of files which are actually drives on that machine. Right click on the one that contains your file and select "map network drive". Map the drive to something like "Z:" and it will appear as a new hard drive on your disk. If you open up the file from this drive it should have a shortenough path that you can open it.

Actually I've thought of another way it can be done while typing this if you are not using a network computer - you can use the subst command.

Say your path to your file is
C:\dir1\dir2\dir3\dir4\dir5\dir6\myfile.doc

click on the windows start key
select run
type in
subst z: c:\dir1\dir2\dir3\dir4\dir5\dir6

a new disk drive should appear - drive Z which is a mapped drive to the dir6 directory. If you open up this Z drive and look in it you should be able to access and rename/delee your file.

I couldn't move or copy or highlight the file or in fact do anything at all with it.

The only thing that DID work was renaming the folder it was in to a much shorter name and then I was able to open the file. I thought I'd lost it - thanks HTH for the tip!
