Hello everyone.

I'm new to t2w and I'm not sure whether or not this is the best place to post
this, but I've seen other threads here discussing trading companies so I'll
give it a try.
If I am wrong then I apologize and would appreciate it if someone could
suggest a better forum. Thanks.

Well, here goes:
Just recently I've got out of university with B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering. My research was in the field of statistical
communications (information theory). To those unfamiliar with this field it
means that I have knowledge in probability theory and a solid background
in math. I also have strong programming skills.

Basically, I'm a very technically oriented person.

I wish to find a job in the trading business where I can put to use my
technical skills as a trader. Now the thing is, I don't want to become a quant
analyst (like having to solve stochastic partial differential eq. for a job), my
goal, if possible, is to become some sort of a trader...

Therefore, I'm trying to find out if there are any places that would be right for
me in that extent and their names. I already know of D.E. Shaw but
unfortunately that's about it.

I've seen that most of the posters here are in the UK and I'm searching
for work in the USA, but maybe some of these companies are global and
have offices in both sides of the atlantic.

If anyone could give me any leads / companies names I'd be most grateful!

Thanks in advance.

fxtrader - try the ''trading for a living forum'' here and equivalent on 'elitetrader.com' which is US based.

There are many genuine opps but also plenty traps for the wide eyed and eager . Proceed with caution.

Good luck!

Hi,

Have you thought of getting a job as a Quant and moving into trading later? To me this seems like the ideal route for someone with your background. Try reading a few books like Market Wizards or FIASCO this may give you a better appreciation of what "type" of trader you would like to become and how others have done it.
Check out the following link:

http://www.numa.com/jobs/ (don't forget to have a look at the bulitin boards as well - vgood).

Best of luck and let me know how you get on.

Hi again, and thanks for the answers.

Hi Ras1974,

Since I was born in the year which appears in your nickname, I'm not sure
I have enough time to first become a quant and then move into trading which,
from what I understand so far, is mainly a younger people's occupation. But
if there is no other choice I will do it of-course.

I have been looking through some popular books already and in the last year
and a half have been following spot fx markets (well at least those provided
by the retail market makers) and some future indices and learning basic
technical analysis methods and about psychology of trading.

This is what I know about myself already, I do not want to be a "regular"
directional trader, a trader that trades the numbers, a trader that lives off the
adrenaline rushes and for him trading is mostly about dealing with
psychological issues and exercising simple money management techniques.

I also don't want to be a quantitative analyst, someone who just crunches
numbers without being involved in the trades.

I would like to find something in the middle. I would like to use advanced
quantitative techniques to, hopefully, compensate for not having the perfect
psych, or to not depend on psych alone, and of-course it will make the job
even more interesting and enjoyable to me.

I'm not saying that I want to find a holy grail through quantitative approaches,
what I am saying is that I believe that MY edge in this business will come from
the mathematical side and my interest in the job would be even higher.

I would like to be a trader, I would like to be compensated according to my
performance (preferably %-wise, even if small), I would like to work in a place
where it's not enough to be a high school graduate or have a degree in
business or economics but you MUST have a post-graduate degree in a
quantitative discipline to do the trading job. Maybe something where you try to
spot market inefficiencies using mathematical tools or something which
involves exotic products (exotic options/derivatives) ? AND eventually be the
one who gets to execute the trades and face the consequences...

Is it possible ?!? if so Where ? This is what I'm wondering about...

That's pretty much it, I hope it didn't sound like I was talking out of my rear
end too much, I was just trying to convey my feelings and thoughts and wasn't
claiming to know how things really are :)

Also, thank you for the numa.com site, too bad most of the positions are in
the UK, but I do see a few in the usa which is great.

Will appreciate any further insights/suggestions you or anyone else may have
for me,

Thanks for all!
Bye.

Hi there !!

Check out www.efinancialcareers.com as they have overseas jobs, although not as many as in the UK .

I have been scanning financial job pages forever now & one thing I have definitely noticed is that there are more & more quant/programming jobs than ever out there so you should be in good shape (I wish I had your qualifications :cheesy: !!!!!!!!) and I think a lot more companies be it brokers or Hedge funds want traders with quant/programming abilities now, if I were you I would be searching anything that includes front office quant, quant trader etc as I'm sure what you want to do exists & is growing ...... also (and apologies if I'm stating the obvious here) have you tried headhunters as there are definitely loads of specialist quant/financial engineering ones out there try www.moneycareers.com for a whole load of US search firms .....???

Good luck ;) !!!!!!
