Hawkins the idiot

Always knew this chap was a stupid mentally deranged lunatic spewing rubbish.

His recent boll0ck-full theory has proved it beyond doubt.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8642558.stm

your judgement based on a 1-page article?
or, have you seen the Discovery Channel programs?

what do have objections about:
the fact that life might exist elsewhere?
(entirely possible, although whether they might be inteligent (dependent on what criteria?) is open to debate)
that we should actively seek to avoid contact?
(arrogance: perhaps these aliens know we exist, and are actively avoiding us)
that aliens may be resource-stripping colonists?
(why would a civilisation capable of crossing galaxies alight here, as they would have to pass billions of other planets to reach us)

oh, and its "Hawkings, the idiot". you missed the "g" in this genius' name.

Mr Hawking keeps spouting rubbish which is hyped up by the public just because they think he is some sort of a genius and there is nothing anyone can challenge about it anyway!... until now...

A Kerala college student, who had disputed the famous black hole theory of noted scientist Stephen Hawking, has become part of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiment. The LHC, a gigantic instrument placed near Geneva, is studying the impact of particle collision.

C.V. Midhun, a second semester B.Sc. Physics student of the Majlis Arts and Science College at Puramannur in Valanchery, is taking part in the LHC experiment online from his home at Naduvattom.

Midhun was given online access to the experiment by the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), the world's largest particle physics laboratory, following the “relativity theories” put forth by him. He had claimed that there would be no black hole when protons collide. He made his point by measuring the energy generated by the cosmic rays coming out of particle collision and comparing it with that of the cosmic rays from the sun.

“The energy of the sun's cosmic rays has been found much more than that of the cosmic rays from particle collision,” he says. “As there is no black hole in the sun, it is unlikely that there will be a black hole when subatomic particle beams collide at very high energy inside the circular accelerator.”

Midhun, son of Vallabhan Namboothiri, a temple priest, and Sreedevi, a teacher, first sent his theory to the Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc) in Bangalore. The IISc scientists, realising the significance of his theories, directed him to the CERN.

Impressed by his theories, the CERN authorities inducted him into the LHC experiment. They made him part of the ATLAS collaboration, one of the six particle detector experiments of the LHC.

So because someone disagrees with his balck hole theory he must therefore be wrong about aliens?

any alien life that can get to earth will have to be superior in technology and science? makes sense to me.

always seemed bonkers to me to 'go looking' for superior beings and naive to assume they would be benign and friendly.

Yes, I compare it to animals from other continents that find their new home a good place to live but gradually wipe out the local fauna. The grey squirrel is one.

In any case, we are such a quarrelsome lot, ourselves, that I am sure that any contact with beings from outer space would end badly---especially if they have oil. :D

By far the most likely reason for granting this student some sort of access is to promote science - not because they have come up with some super duper theory that debunks the theory of black holes. The chance of a second semester physics undergraduate doing that is very small indeed.

Quite possibly the kid had shown excellent scientific reasoning, but thats almost certainly all there is to it.

Black holes are widely accepted in science and until such time as compelling peer reviewed research to the contrary is published, that situation is not going to change.

Don't believe mainstream press reporting of science - especially to support your anti science bias.

Has anyone considered the possibility that good ole Planet Earth is the psycho ward for the rest of the universe? mahahahahahaha

I agree with the Prof - aliens are likely to be very dangerous. That's why we need to get working on this soonest:

Don't worry we are very well prepared. It started in the 80s with space invaders and very soon we had experts able to take out all of them. Since that time it has graduated to ever more complex battle simulations. Those not in the "know" have argued that all these supposed games have waterlogged the brains of those who spend hours daily engaged in them. It also appears that they are endlessly mesmerised by them when in reality these very people will be the saviours of mankind. When the aliens arrive it will only be these people who will be adequately prepared and battle hardened and who will know how to tackle the alien threat.

this presupposes aliens will attack in physical spaceships in a boxed formation.
have we started to build day-glo green bunkers to hide behind?

just as long our politicians don't sell them the earth for a handful of beads, I guess.

EDIT: OR, the aliens may come disguised as tall, slim, fair-haired with blue-eyes, and scam us.
It's always fascinated me how we represent "bad aliens" as reptilian, scaly, with sharp teeth, and "good aliens" as cute and cuddly. weird. clearly some form of stereotyping.
I've always wondered how audiences would react if the sharp-fanged, red-eyed, scaly aliens were the clever and humane ones, and the evil killer aliens were angelic with fluffy wings.

chilltrader,

Please point to your scientific acheivements that surpass Hawking Radiation and I may change my view that it is you who is the idiot.

Kind regards,

I'm pretty expert at scientism as it happens.

I can put my hand through a bunsen burner flame, and can tell you if a test-tube is filled with oxygen or hydrogen with just a lighted splint.

I've also worn lab coats and know that cobalt chloride is blue, but goes red when you put water on it.

So I think I'm well qualified to talk about ologies and that.

can you explain why a mirror gives a reversed image horizontally, but not vertically?
why does left appear on the right, and vice-versa, but top doesnt appear at the bottom?
thanks

Certainly, this is a function of refractation and magnetismisation. The effects can easily be calculated by using this simple process (or "formulaic", as we scienticians call them):

thank you very much for the elucidation.

I know where I went wrong. When I was mathematicalising, (thats a clever way of counting) I didn't carry the 1. DOH!

You're not talking about Justin Hawkins are you ?

If so, I would be inclined to agree that he is an idiot.

In fact, I would go further, he is a right fricking twa*t.
