Today a salesman in maplins uk informed me that if I didn't have surge protection my guarantee is void. .............. I never gave this any thought.

Actually I was trying to get a faulty power supply replaced and he was having none of it because I have no surge protection. He did replace it eventually. Guaranteed? are you sure?

Fit for purpose? Were you told at the time that it was a condition of the guarantee that a surge protector had to be used? I have seen PC's survive near lightening strikes, where the modem and phone have been vaporised, but the rest of the PC worked 100%. FYI, PC power supplies have inbuilt surge protection and spike filters. Why would you need more?

I had a run-of-the-mill surge protector with a telephone line connection. During a recent storm it sacrificed itself - telephone and electrical circuit. Have now replaced it with a heftier unit. The salesman who said you needed a surge protector in order to keep your guarantee in force is probably trying to pass the buck as most (all?) surge protectors (even the smallest) have a replacement guarantee on equipment (starting at about $2,000).

No conditions on the guarantee- all I got was a verbal "you have 12 months guarantee" It was part of a case deal so I still have the motherboard etc still under guarantee (I hope) only reason for posting is so that other members are aware of this. If you don't have surge protection you might have a problem.

Just say you have it even if you don't-could save a lot of hassle
