Futures question

Hi,

I currently have a short position in ES Mini December 16 that is down. What happens at the expiration date with these? Do I need to liquidate them beforehand? One source said they roll over to the next futures contract, is that something that happens automatically or I'd have to buy these then short the March futures? Thanks for your answers.

Yep, yourself... Go flat ES Dec 16 and short same amount on ES Mar 17.

Don't trade individual contracts, buy the Dec16/Mar17 spread to roll your short dec into long mar.
