due diligence on a US firm

Can anyone advise on how best to do background checks on US based firms?

The firm I wish to check out is based in Las Vegas, Nevada - is there a US equivalent of Companies House? Is it possible to check up on such information as capitalization, etc to get an idea of the security of any particular company?
