May - October 1893 was the Chicago World's Fair. A statue of The Republic was built.
Dr.H Holmes owned the major hotel there. He attracted lots of women, particularly young ones. He would lock them into an ordinary looking room at the hotel, which was also an airtight chamber and release gas into the room to kill them. In the basement he dissected the corpses and sold them on to the medical profession. At his trial he admitted to 28 murders but there may have been many more.
America's first known serial killer. He was found guilty and hanged.

America's first notorious swindler lived about 100 years ago in New York called C. Parker. He was known to have hatched huge swindles by selling shares in the newly opened Brooklyn Bridge. He went on with this scheme and sold shares, particularly to immigrants of The Statue of Liberty, President Grant's tomb etc. The authorities finally nailed him with a 4th minor charge and he served the rest of his life in prison.
