Hi all

I am trying to convert the output of CMS's visual trader software. (Spot currency dealing software) into Metastock format for backtesting etc.

They allow export to the clipboard by selecting an area of chart so data can be in daily, weekly or intraday format. I have attached an examlpe of what you get if you paste a selection of 15 minute data into Excel and am looking to see if anyone can tell me how to get a security setup in the downloader that i can paste the data directly into or how to do it via Excel as an intermediate step.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi awoodj sorry if this is too late but, but when you open metastock and then open The Downloader, open the tools menu and then click on convert, select xls (as this is the excel format), you can also download data in ascii format, then choose your destination and choose convert. Then open the converted data in Metstock

HTH, you might've allready worked it out by now

Cheers Ilia

Did that work?

Hi there

Thanks for the reply, i think i tried something along those lines at the time but as all the fields did not match (or exist in some cases) the results in Metastock were pretty useless.

Not had another chance to play with i so no further forward yet.

Did yours come in in a usable way?

Thanks

Al

Awoodj I have not tested it yet but think that the field names are not suitable for metastock, so it will not work. Is there another export function, I think that if you export it in ascii then open it in excel there is a small wizard that will change the fields to those required by metastock.

Will try something tommorrow or today

Cheers

Ilia

Easy way to do it

1) Save your EXCEL file as a CSV file
2) split date and time into separate cells / resave
3) Download trial C2MS (Convert to Metastock) program from http://www.trading-tools.com
4) Convert your file -- the program allows zillions of date formats and up to 15 user fields.

While the program gives you a free trial period I was so impressed I actually registered it -- it's very cheap and a useful tool to have anyway.

Otherwise try downloading metastock downloader from equis and import your excel file as an intraday format file. The downloader used to be free -- bot sure if it is anymore as I have metastock 8 and not the new version.

Good Luck

Kyle did it work? Strange, does it convert the data fields to metastock format because I thought metastock doesn't accept those type of column names

I'll try and update the converted file on my web server -- I've amended my previous post -- it works with the Equis metsatock downloader provided you split date and time up.

Add a couple of fields

e.g here's one I did for RBS from NYSE on 13 Apr until today 19 apr

Add to your data the ticker / symbol
change time format as I've got it
you can ignore last two fields Vol and Opneint

Now it converts simply to metastock.

<TICKER>,<DTYYYYMMDD>,<TIME>,<OPEN>,<HIGH>,<LOW>,<CLOSE>,<VOL>,<OPENINT>

Here's a picture of the smart chart (metastock) of the data posted above.

File converted using Metastock's downloader program (ASCII to Metastock)

http://www.1kyle.com/metastock.jpg

Works for any intrday stuff (currencies etc) so long as the format is OK --- just "poodlefake" a valid symbol with the -I suffix to denote intraday.

Took a little while to get it right but it works fine.
