Anyone in Thailand?

Just stumbled on this thread.
It's nice to see so many people that can manage to live in Thailand and trade.
I live in a village near Khon Kaen and suffered the terrible Ipstar service for internet. Now I'm with CAT CDMA EV-DO Rev A. It's not great, but at least I get a good enough connection to trade.
I love the MT4 platform as it seems that the data is downloaded to my computer and then updated. With other platforms I have to download all the data afresh when I want to open a chart.
I only have MT4 platforms as demo accounts at the moment and trade with CMC.
I would like to open a new account and would like to hear about other Brits that have managed to open an account while living in Thailand.
I have a UK address and bank accounts and my preferred platform is Alpari at the moment.

Thanks Guys (and girls?)

If you have a UK address - you'll need some proof of address to open an account - just use that. Don't tell them you are in Thailand.

If you apply from Thailand, you'll need proof of address from within Thailand - utility bills mostly, which you will need to have officially translated to English by a notary public/lawyer. Your name must be on the bill, not Noi, Nok, Tingtong or Porn. Note that IB will not accept anything from a bank as proof of address if you live in Thailand.

and transferring money OUT of Thailand is a nightmare - officially the banks will only permit money transfers if the purpose is for family or education purposes.
So if you don't maintain a UK bank account for transfers, you'll need to open one in Singapore and fly down occasionally if you need to top it up to transfer cash to your trading account

[funnily enough, the Thais let you transfer money IN easily enough....... :) ]

Gambling is illegal in Thailand Somphol.

Most gambling sites are blocked from Thailand. Most spread betting sites are not.

Contact a spread bet broker - if they let you open an account you will be able to use it from Thailand but technically, you will be breaking Thai law.

Considering the efficiency of the Thai police, I wouldn't let this concern you too much.

Hi Dionysus Toast,

Thanks a lot for your reply .I came from Thailand I am in London now .After losing my job I am making a living by trading equities with a spreadbetting company in London as I found trading fx was too volatile .I am thinking of going back to Thailand to trade as the cost of living overthere is lower than London .Thank again .

Regards,

Somphol

Somphol - if you can make a living spread betting, you'll make a much better living using a real broker.

Set up your accounts whilst you at there and then access them from Thailand - you will have no problems at all.

Dionysus Toast ,
Thank for your suggestion .The reason i do spread betting because the company needs only 5% deposit . If I do £10 per point (1000 shares) on £20 stock ,I need only £1000 . I trade the volatility ,I would take profit when the stock moves 7 or 8 pence and I try to make £100 or 150 per day.But if i use the broker to trade stock ,the capital has to be very large ,at the moment I cannot afford .Anyway thank you very much for your help.

With kind regards,
Somphol

I lived and traded from Bangkok for 7 months about 4 years ago. I am interested in going to Thailand again for a few months. 4 years ago I just did a visa-run to Cambodia every month and was thus able to stay in the country for quite a while very easily.

Is that situation still the same? Or is is more difficult to arrange visas now?

Currently living in London/UK.

When you fly into Thailand without a Visa, you will be given a 30 days stay. Strictly speaking, you should have a return ticket to prove that you intend to leave Thailand within 30 days. Although this is rarely checked by Thai immigration, some airlines will not allow you to board without a return ticket unless you have a visa.
Entries at a land border nowadays only get you 15 days and I think that they only allow a maximum of 4 entries.

As you are in the UK, your best option is to get a visa from the Consulate in Hull.

You can apply by post and they are very quick.
A tourist visa will allow you 60 days stay per entry and can be extended by 30 days at an immigration office at a cost of 1,900 Baht. You can get a single, double or triple entry visa, but all entries have to be used within 6 months of the date of issue. (3 months with the single entry, I think)

A non immigrant "o" visa allows 90 days stay per entry. You can get a 1 year multi entry and that allows you to travel in and out of Thailand as many times as you like within a year and everytime you enter Thailand a new 90 day "permission to stay" starts. I think that the multi is about 100 Pounds.

Gum Rai, thanks for your detailed reply. That actually sounds like very good news. I thought it might be more difficult than that!

Thanks again.

What do you guys day trade in Thailand?

I'm trading NQ's mostly. I like living in Thailand but not much of a social live trading US markets all night, every night.

US Equities; listed stocks, no pinks

you are right, trading at night takes a while to get used to, but its not all that bad really.

sleep late, wake up late .... you get the whole day to take care of things and hit the gym with less traffic. then start looking for trades when you're back at your desk by 18:00 during the peak hours to avoid traffic... trade light friday's then hit the bar

this type of lifestyle helps reduce the happy hour drinking during the weekday, wasnt good for me anyway

I didn't mind the sleeping late part until they started building a new condo building right outside my bedroom window... those guys get up early! :)

I realise that this post is a bit old but....

I was looking at Thailand as a place to set-up but I was reading that unless you have a work permit, it would be impossible to set up a broadband connection from an apartment since the providers wouldnt deal with you?
