My Norton subscription is just coming to an end, and my bank (Barclays) is offering 2 years free sub to F-Secure virus checker for on-line customers. I've not heard of it - does anyone know if it's any good, or am I better off paying for my old reliable Norton security software?

Thanks.

Jack,

I've never used F-Secure so can't comment of that piece of software. However, I too use Nortons and thought that they were also reliable. However, this wasn't the case.

I won't bore you with the details but my laptop started experiencing problems yet Nortons showed no viruses. However, after downloading another package and rescanning my machine I found 11 viruses!!!!!

If you want a VERY GOOD anti-virus package check out Kaspersky.

IMO There is nothing worse than a false sense of security and that is unfortunately what Nortons offers.

PS. For the record I also have 2 friends who had similar problems with Nortons so my case isn't in isolation.

Hope this helps......

I've always used AVG free software and I have never had a virus slip through yet... (touches wood rather swiftly!)

F-Secure . . . I tried it on several installations, and found it more resource-hungry than Norton (yes, it is possible apparently) and no better than my current (and the best, imo) solution, NOD32.

AVG/Avast etc are all very good but they have all missed things in the past which NOD32 finds every time - and it is also the only AV product to have never missed a virus in over 7 years.

AntiVir

Plenty of reading here. http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=494802
http://www.all-internet-security.com/top_10_antivirus_software.html

For what it's worth, I'm still using AntiVir http://www.free-av.com/ without any problems.
It's caught a few trojans recently without allowing them to instal. It auto updates when you connect to the internet and it runs a scheduled scan each day. I run other online scans and none has ever found anything that AntiVir has missed....and it's free :cheesy:

Thanks all. A quick post-script. I uninstalled Norton and put F-Secure in its place. It lasted a day, simply because it used so many resources, my PC felt like it was wading through treacle. So I chucked that out and installed AVG (free version). Brilliant. Now it's the opposite, and makes me realise how many resources Norton must have been using. It's like I've got a new souped-up PC. Very pleased with it so far - thanks for all your advice.
