A volcano in Iceland, beneath Iceland's Eyjafjallaokull glacier, erupted Wednesday, spewing volcanic ash and gas consisting of sulfuric dioxide 30,000 to 36,000 feet in the air, near cruising levels for jet airplanes. Volcanic ash consists of tiny bits of jagged rock and glass. This ash and gas could affect aircraft visibility and get sucked into engines, melting parts and causing engine failures mid-air.
This caused the largest flight disruption in and out of Europe since World War II on Thursday, worse than what transpired at 9/11, September 2001. Almost all flights were canceled into and out of Europe on Thursday, affecting passenger flights all around the world. Many flights already in the air had to turn around and return to their departure sites. If the volcano continues to erupt for days and weeks, intercontinental air travel could be disrupted for weeks, maybe months.
The problem is, almost all flight paths for U.S. East Coast travel to Europe are close to this volcanic plume.
