Yes the bookies cheat, this is not restricted to IG, they all do it.

Sometimes the spread is not enough for them to get an edge over the punters so they need that little extra.

This is most true on markets where they cannot easily hedge your bet due to various reasons.

How did your account go so negative if you were betting so small?

Best to just pay up and move on.

The "debt" is less than 5K.

My view:

* You will have to pay them the money, because you probably continued to trade beyond the point that you will (in hindsight) highlight as evidence of unfair behaviour by IG

* You probably won't go bankrupt, the Statutory demand is just a bluff / scare tactics.

* You joined these boards in 2003; you are trying to scalp, through a spreadbetter, at 24p per point. Give it up.

His older posts don't seem to be bashing IG particularly. I don't see any convincing evidence that he's another firm's plant. Innocent until proved guilty, surely?

Down 100K and also 5K in debt.

I hope you didn't borrow money from friends/family and credit cards to fund your trading.

Pay your debts and stick to direct access trading if you want to trade short term.

You will find the following warning at the bottom of each home page of every single spread bet firm:

"spread betting is a leveraged product and can result in losses that exceed your initial deposit. "

There is what is known as a Limited Risk account type but it is not the mainstream account type. In the same way that most Bank accounts will let you go overdrawn unless you specifically use an account type that can't.
