Boys Toys for a grand?

I'd have to see it in the metal, but I think I prefer the black watch face. It seems to complement the strap better than the blue, but of course it's your call. If you like a lot of crap on watch faces why not check out Breitling, or is that a bit OTT.

So my last lucky streak got me an VR6 Passat.

I haven't quite banked that much money this time around - but I want a reward and have a grand to blow. Problem is on what?

To give me some ideas - What would you spend it on it right now?

Have you considered P***s enlargement?
The clinic that reduced mine should still have some surplus leftover for your op....ask for a discount, mention my name.

you mean you used to be a bigger dick than you are now? wow.

oh and I bought a family estate car so wtf.

I was liking the watch idea until you just introduced me to the platinum site, this could be the most educational thread yet! :)

But if we must go back to watches - a big fat NO to Tag, thats what the Rooneys would buy! Rollers are a bit cliche'd but theyre the only watch that holds and in some cases increases in value - a sub mariner bought 5 years ago for £3K would now be worth about £3.5...

Anyway, back to platinum portfolio....:p

Feel free to take your pick.

When i get to my first £250k im gonna treat myself to 2 of them, actually make that 3, at the same time.

I think once one has a decent amount of money, 9 figures say, one should emulate wittgenstein, who gave his entire fortune to his (equally rich) siblings as he knew that the additional wealth wouldn't corrupt them, they being used to it.

**** the poor, they don't know what to do with clean drinking water anyway.

Watches...

Tags are not highly regarded by collectors so tend to depreciate rapidly.

Rolexes (Submariners in particular) tend to hold the value more.

The other alternative that suffers depreciation less is Panerai.

However, both are well out of your budget unless you go for older ones like a Rolex Oysterdate - in which case, over time, they may well increase in value. Also, older Omegas tend to hold their values quite well. By old, I mean 1970s and older so they tend to be smaller watches with 36mm diameter cases and smaller.

If you don't want to lose a great deal then you have to be careful what you end up with.

cheers all. The watch isn't an investment it's going to be a watch. So i'm more interested in something that works well for me. so it's got to be pretty sturdy yet still good for work. My current one is a bit of a dress watch thing and I want one more sporty looking.

Well, if you're buying brand new as per your PM and your budget is £1k, unfortunately, this puts you out of the Omega/Rolex/Panerai/Patek range... 41mm automatic Longines Hydroconquest in black. Classic colour, quality watch for those who know. Less obvious than an Omega. Same family company ie Swatch so similar levels of quality.

Resale value has been hovering around the £450 mark for the last year and they go pretty quickly when they're advertised on specialist forums.

Up to you. Not worth the money. Ultimately, it's not really better than a £150 Suunto and I'd rather get a G-shock Riseman if I wanted those functions because a G is far more rugged than any other watch you could buy plus I'd buy a real compass as it will be more accurate. The Riseman is good enough for predicting the weather. Like Suuntos, it uses air pressure to measure altitude - this function is a gimmick on watches as you have to "zero" it when you know the real altitude using known data because the air pressure changes all the time; for instance, right now, I'm apparently 175m above sea level so at the top of a hill... I know my house is a mere 15m above sea level being in SW London and near a river; so if you're going on a 12 hour trek up some mountain in the Himalayas, every 3 hours, you'd have to work out where you are on the map then reset your watch (Suunto or G) to match the official height... seems a bit pointless and only suitable for perhaps recording your rate of ascent/decent over time.

On the plus side, I didn't have to look at the weather forecast on TV to know it would be raining. The air pressure had been plummeting. It's like a leading indicator. Shame I can't get a watch to tell me which direction the market will be moving in.

I had a T6 for running a while back and liked it. Maybe I'm just a sucker as I thought that this looked like a big step up in quality to that (and that cost about £200). It it's crystal etc etc.

The altitude thing is a bit crap, but I like the idea of having a baraometer and compass - I doubt I will ever use them but that is another matter.

Yes, you're right - I know an unhealthy amount of things about watches. It comes from sitting around all day waiting for trades and starting to like the mechanical aspect of watches as a kind of extension of my passion for sports cars... high quality mechanical Swiss watches are like having tiny spring-powered engine on your wrist... put together by hand by some of the top engineers. Even the cheaper end of the scale are built by hand - parts are so small that a machine couldn't do it properly, I understand. It's crazy - you need specialist screwdrivers, every aspect of assembling a watch requires a different tool eg there's an hour hand tool just for putting the hour hand on... if you use it on the minute hand, you'll damage the hand!

This is the ultimate in watch creation: gyrotourbillon. It's not actually any better than a certified automatic, as I understand it, but it's the technical brilliance that means JLC can charge a million euros for it.
