If you buy cthe calls and sell the puts that's just a synthetic long mr riprock... doesn't seem like a play on anything!

maybe I got my strikes mixed up. don't think i did tho. why would you do that for 1m SPY shares? there was alot of slippage 'cos of the trade size (about 50% of daily volume) so why not just buy SPY?

maybe there were other trades going through in other expiries/strikes that I missed as well

Nah, if it's a riskie, it's not a synthetic long/short, since it's diff strikes. Wait, it was the same strike... Hmmm, could be a carry/margin-related arb of some sort then.
 
well its notial size is $128m (ish), which is actually quite alot of equity to buy I reckon. so if its a leveraged trade then I think it must be some relative value or something trade cos $128m with leverage must be serious coin.

I dunno maybe someone said to a bank "buy me 1m of SPY" and the bank said "OK" and instead bought the synthetic position straight away and will slowly swap the synthetic contracts for the underlying? so in terms of slippage per notional, options are deeper than the underlying?

i dunno im just guessing about this now.
 
err but the notional size of underlying works out at 2,005 ES futures which is way easier to do prolly get no more than 2 tick slippage even if you just went straight to mkt. (and then try in the EFP market)

so i think Martinghoul is right and it's some fancy clever stuff.
 
If they got rid of howard the lulz/non-lulz ratio would improve.

lulz is basically protest vote.
