Precisely why it took five armed policemen to detain him is unclear. But there they were as he stepped bleary-eyed off the plane after a sleepless 11-hour flight from Arizona to Heathrow.

By the time they had escorted him to a private area, Graham Linehan's 'offence' had been explained to him. He was under arrest for a series of 'anti-trans' social media posts.

UK deputy PM admits £40K stamp duty error on flat

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner admitted Tuesday she underpaid up to £40,000 in stamp duty on her £800,000 Hove flat and referred herself to the ministerial standards adviser, ending weeks of denials and mounting political pressure.

In a tearful interview with Sky News, Rayner acknowledged that accusations she failed to pay the correct stamp duty rate on her seafront property were "accurate," marking a dramatic reversal from her previous position. The admission followed the lifting of a court order that had prevented her from discussing complex financial arrangements involving her disabled son.

Complex Trust Arrangements Cited

Rayner explained that the confusion arose from a trust established by a court in 2020 following an award for her son, who sustained lifelong disabilities from an injury. When she divorced in 2023, the family home was transferred to this trust to provide stability for her children, with Rayner and her ex-husband maintaining shared access.

"The trust was set up by a court to provide for my son after an injury," Rayner said, rejecting suggestions she deliberately structured the arrangement to avoid tax. She paid £30,000 in stamp duty rather than the £70,000 that would have applied if the Hove property was classified as a second home.

Initial legal advice suggested she was liable only for the standard rate, but subsequent expert counsel determined the trust arrangement meant additional stamp duty was owed. "The leading tax counsel who has subsequently looked at it has said that actually, because of that, it did remain my sole property," she explained.

Political Fallout and Resignation Consideration

The Deputy Prime Minister revealed she considered resigning over the matter, telling Sky News she had been "in shock" and was "devastated" by the error. "I spoke to my family about it. I spoke to my ex-husband," she said when asked if she thought about "packing it in".Prime Minister Keir Starmer had previously backed Rayner, calling her a "great British success story" and criticizing briefings against her. However, Conservative Party chairman Kevin Hollinrake has demanded a full investigation, labeling her actions "hypocritical tax avoidance" for a minister who advocates higher taxes on second homes.Rayner has contacted HMRC to arrange payment of the outstanding tax and referred herself to the Independent Adviser on Ministerial Standards for investigation. As housing secretary, she oversees policies including council tax and stamp duty rates, adding to the political sensitivity of the matter.

My Lord, the evidence before this court clearly demonstrates that the accused has given false testimony.

Rayner said she had sought legal advice when making the purchase but that it had failed to "properly take account" of her circumstances.

Fact from fiction: Rayner cannot sue improper legal advise because non was given !

The crime statistics comparison between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the United Kingdom (UK) in 2025 highlight a significantly lower crime rate in the UAE versus the UK.

Key points from recent data:
  • The UAE has a very low overall crime index of about 14.8, while the UK has a moderate crime index near 48.5. The safety scale scores reflect this with the UAE scoring around 85.2 (very safe) and the UK about 51.5 (moderately safe).
  • In specific crime concerns, the UAE rates very low on worries about home break-ins, car theft, street attacks, drug use, violent crimes like assault, property crimes, corruption, and ethnic/religious attacks. The UK rates moderate to high in many of these areas, especially with concerns about drug dealing, violent assault, and property crimes.
  • In England and Wales for the year ending March 2025, there were about 9.4 million estimated criminal incidents, with a noted increase in fraud and theft. Homicides were recorded at 535 cases, showing a 6% decrease from the previous year. Theft and fraud-related crimes are among the most significant contributors to crime figures in the UK.
  • Dubai specifically, as a major city in the UAE, shows a very low crime index of 16.1 compared to London’s much higher 55.4. Violent crimes, drug problems, and property crimes are reported as very low in Dubai versus moderate to high in London.
Overall, the UAE is characterized by very low crime rates and high personal safety perceptions relative to the UK, which has a broader range and higher levels of criminal activity, especially in urban areas. The contrast is stark in rates of violent crime, property crime, and drug-related issues. This reflects the UAE’s strict law enforcement and social policies in comparison to the UK's more varied challenges with crime.

This comparison provides insight into the relative safety and crime environment of both countries as of 2025.

  • This is Orwellian.
  • The authorities censored a picture of Lucy Connolly's daughter which was sent to her in prison because she was holding a Union flag.
  • I know I shouldn't be shocked, but I am.This is disgusting.

The issue involving Lucy Connolly concerns her daughter, Edie, who represented Britain at the World Junior Championships. Photographs of Edie and other girls, each holding their national flags, were sent to Lucy Connolly while she was in prison. However, prison authorities censored out the UK Union Jack flag from these photos before allowing Lucy to see them, meaning she was not permitted to receive images clearly showing the British national flag her daughter was holding while representing the country.

Details of the Controversy

  • Lucy Connolly's husband sent her photographs of their daughter Edie in prison; these showed Edie with the Union Jack, celebrating her participation as a British athlete.
  • Prison officials intervened and censored these pictures—removing or obscuring the Union Jack flag—before delivering them to Lucy, allegedly deeming the flag "too dangerous to share" within the prison context.
  • The case has been cited in media discussion about the perception and official treatment of British national symbols, with the censorship sparking debate about overreach and the stigmatization of the UK flag.

Public and Media Reaction

  • The incident has contributed to wider discourses in the UK about national identity, censorship, and official attitudes toward the national flag, particularly in contexts considered sensitive or potentially inflammatory.
  • Critics have used this event to highlight what they see as inconsistency or politicization in the treatment of national symbols within prisons and other institutions.

Summary

Lucy Connolly's case gained attention because it illustrates the contentious treatment of the UK flag in some institutions, leading to censorship even in a family context where a daughter was representing her country abroad. The event sparked debate on censorship, national pride, and bureaucratic overreach in the UK.

Angela Rayner did table and vote for a motion on 6 February 2024 while in Opposition that sought to prevent outgoing ministers who breach the ministerial code from receiving severance pay. The motion proposed that ministers who quit while under investigation for gross misconduct or breaching the code would have their severance withheld unless or until cleared, and Labour pledged to bring these rules into effect upon entering government.

Rayner recently resigned after it was found that she failed to meet the “highest possible standards of proper conduct” with respect to underpaid stamp duty on a property, which led the ethics adviser to confirm a breach of the ministerial code. However, because Labour’s new severance rules only come into force in October 2025, she remains eligible for a severance payout of close to £17,000 due to the current statutory entitlements.

Given the clear intention behind the February 2024 motion—to prevent severance for ministers in breach—and Labour’s public commitment to the principle, it would appear inconsistent for Rayner to accept the payment now, even if the new rules do not yet formally apply to her case.
