The difference is the IRA's main motive was to cause Northern Ireland to get independence from Britain.
Nathan Ruth's motive appears to be because of conflicts between his religion and others.
So, highlighting the religion is relevant to the story.

Yes in this case what you say is true as it seems like he has found a purpose in his life and is defending his new identity. However, you seem to side step the sectorian aspect of the violance that went on for quiete some time in Northern Ireland.
If you did want to portray the reason for his actions it is written in his words.
It is not because he converted to the religion Islam but more to do with how he feels as written in his words.
Like you he feels he and his identity is under attack.
If as a newspaper of integrity if you did wish to convey the true reason behind this persons attacks - written above in his words, "their viciousness to Islam and the muslims".
There are many converts to Islam and they don't go around killing people. Muhammad Ali and Cat Stevens immideately comes to mind. Not something I would recommend converting to any religion but the point remains, the Western media is out to demonise Islam and Muslims whilst ignoring their political and democratic struggles.
Personally, I hate these silos of religion and so called culture which is more about gang warfare then anything to do with liberties or freedoms. It is about social conditioning and brain washing mindless pigeon brains into thinking they belong to some invisible cause and brain washed into thinking their way of life and freedoms (famous shit words from Bush and the yanks) are under attack.
