I worry as to how real this programme is. I mean they are shorting stock without securing borrow and I also saw them shorting financials last night. If this was filmed Sept last year as they say, surely they have traded illegally?

The only good thing to come out of this programme is that is destroys some of the theories around how the city works. Maybe now they see that we actually do earn our money. Sure we get paid well but we definatley earn it!

are you suggesting that he's a fan of the old Bolivian marching powder? ;)

The programme had lots of potential, but it is not great (although I still always watch it!)
I expect the US will follow suit with their own version, and I hope that they will concentrate on something a bit more systematic and technical.

no powder, whats that. just saying he must have a continuous cold. its a shame that they are not showing the technical side more. you could see last night how much they were using those great bloomberg terminals to generate ideas but this was not concentrated on.

its a shame that this has just become another reality TV show for the masses. hey who knows lex might turn up on celebrity big brother this week, telling everybody they have **** for brains.

According to the Daily Telegraph

The bottom line for Van Dam with the Million Dollar Traders programme is not to encourage trading at all. "Actually a lot of people who are trading shouldn't be trading. This is not a PR exercise for the industry."

Still think the 'traders' are actually out of work actors.

Perhaps the answer lies here.....

they could not be actors simply because of tv compliance rules which have been tightened since the "queen" affair a few years ago

Do an image search on google for Anton Kreil and you get lots of tomb stones. Maybe there's a message there...?? :)

i see on one chart they were using 60 100 200 smas on 1hr and volume. were they allowed to deal fx or commodities? that is where the big trends are? and interest rates is once a month news.

i suppose if you pay charges/tax for share trading you wouldn't go less than 1hr because you'd be be chopped up by the costs of trading?

like anton said you don't hedge trade for 10 mins?

I love how whenever any of them makes a big mistake and they get the call from Lex he acts as though he's angry that the traders don't know what they're doing or that he had any expectation at all to ever see his million pounds again. Even a sh*t for brains like me knows better.

All in all though, I find it pretty entertaining

I think he has a massive expectation to see his million pounds again, considering that even a team of untrained monkeys wouldn't lose more than about 30k tops in 2 months the way these guys are trading

the moving averages are generally default settings on yourt bloomie too so they probably didn't put them on themselves....

he is a Richard Dennis wanabe end of sotry..with a modern xfactor/simon cowell spin on it..such a waste of air time!

I see your point, but the guy didn't become a billionaire by taking needless risk. Plus, is there a possibility he was paid in some manner for the show?

whenever you see "Based on a concept by" in the credits , it means they own the concept, the format (as VanDam does with 'traders').. they'll receive substantial royalties whenever its sold to other territories... saying as the Beeb would've fronted the production and post production money, Van Dams 200 grand is looking like a pretty good investment... the international market will probably love this crap.
Franc Rodham of "Quadraphenia" fame for example, is still raking it in not from that movie, but because he developed the concept of "Masterchef" he hasn't had anything to do with the show in practical terms since the lloyd grossman days...

He went to the BBC with the concept, so I'd guess it was some sort of vanity project where he was willing to sacrifice 100 grand or so to boost his public image and thus the profile of his other funds.

yes i'm surprised sbs /brokers don't do it. they are confident to give people wedges of cash to join up with them with the full knowledge they will get it back and then some? they would have to newbies for them to feel confident they would get the money back in what would be free advertising to drive a steady stream of newbies who blow up accounts?

when it was up did anyone play fxplayerpro?

The sbs/brokers are regulated they probably wouldnt get permission.
A guy (Don Bright) over at elite trader who runs a prop firm in the USA, posted that he wanted to do something like this but his regulators said "no way".
I dont think UK prop firms are regulated, so a company like Futex could have done it..

I know some dudes that wanted to do this with porn stars. BUt the BBC turned them down when approached.

I have watched the first two episodes, interesting so far, there will be more departures...
