Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam

The 'from' email address in spam is actually meaningless, it's usually a made up address. It's a weakness of the mail protocol that any (even a non existant) address can be specified. So blocking 'from' addresses does no help. It is the IP address that the mail came from or was relayed via that is the important bit that can identify spam.

Mailwasher is useful for screening mail, but adding individual email addresses to it's block list doesn't really help.

The tip above (marking anyone not on your contact list as possible spam) is a good one but can make it easy to delete mail you might have wanted (all too easy to press the "Process Mail" button before properly looking at all the senders).
