Random!

The mid summer weather is superb up here, in my new summer home town of Godthab, Greenland.

Now thats a really interesting choice of summer place, pretty pretty cool, definitely sthg outside of your average everyday choice.

Sounds good.

The nightlife is a bit dull, here in Godthab, but i've had my fill of discos, strip-clubs & casinos in any case!

Not sure if I could survive that tho :D

It can be quite difficult getting to sleep at night, but i have found that a good pair of curtains helps.

My internet connection is a tad dodgy at the moment, as we do not have the most technically advanced infrastructure in my community.

But, the (summer) weather is pleasant and the air is clean, the views are nice, the people are friendly, the atmosphere is peaceful, AND the fishing is free, they're the main things.

I'm sure in time, as i adapt, I'll also cope without a local shopping centre or mutli-plex cinema, hopefully!

Peace!

Yes, when it came down to it, after looking hard at what I am interested in, I was really left with 2 options on my short-list. In the end it was a close call.......It was either Godthab, or Ibiza.

Ibiza benefits -
Sun, sea, sand, sex and sangria
Lots of bang tidy girls on their holidays looking for a good time, having left their inhibitions back home
Sunny weather
Lots of leisure facilities
Pubs, clubs and lots of restaurants
Nice sandy beaches
Topless beaches
Nudist beaches

Godthab benefits -
24 hour daylight in summer
A more temperate climate
Superb coastal wild-life
Free-fishing and all the free fish you can eat
Beaches
A post office,
A general grocery store,
A store selling a superb aray of seal skin garments,
A traditional fishermans pub,
Free free seal blubber at the butchers
Its also peaceful, quiet and less touristy with endless space to make use of

Hopefully I'll not regret choosing Godthab.

Hows the travel there, anything direct, or lots of switching ?

Where does one stay there, rent a cottage, bed and breakfast kind of thing ?

Definitely sounds interesting.

I flew to Copenhagen. There are 6 weekly flights to Kangerlussuaq Airport. From there, I had a small private hire aircraft that dropped me 20km from Godthab. I then used a dog-sled "taxi service" that ran me to Godthab.

I guess we can have beach parties, similar to Ibiza. Though, the clothing requirements will be a tad different  I'll have to see if the locals are up for it!

I say you chap, is that painshop pro you've used?

If so, how does one go about "acquiring" paintshop pro, for a minimal/none existent  "fee", of course?

Yup, getting a goodish beach party going would be high up on the priority list I agree !!

With some good beach fires going the dress code could maybe still be distinctly minimalist.

Just need plenty of firewood to keep em all warm and comfy :D

My prediction for the week ahead -
Andy Murray - Wimbledon Mens Singles Champion 2008.

He's got to be my boy Rafa to get there, but i think Andy will prevail!

Ok so he lost. New prediction - Rafa to become Wimbledon gaffa!

Google SketchUp

The free version is CAD package is really fun and probably useful.
I'm about to build a house extension and thought this could help design it, but I think the learning curve x-axis might have been better spent with a ruler and pencil!

World Class Performance - How It Works

* Band A – Medallist at Olympic or World Championship level
* Band B – Top 8 finish at Olympic or World level competition
* Band C – Likely to be major championship performers, but flexibility given to individual sports to set their own criteria

Maximum award levels for athletes on Podium level funding are currently set as follows:

* Band A - £23,930
* Band B - £17,948
* Band C - £11,965

Blooming heck!

Having watched the BBC1 documentary about 4 young UK sprinters last night, and seeing the amount of hard tedious physical work they have to put in, i was intrigued by the evel of financial backing UK sports lottery funding provides. £23k for a podium finisher at world or olympic level .
These people must rely heavily on sponsorship deals etc. The UK elite athletes like Paula Radcliffe, Kelly Holmes etc. will have done pretty well because they will have big sponsorship deals. But it must be tough for the up & coming athletes trying to break into the top ranks of UK athletics performances, who have no sponsorship deals and a £12k bursary to live on as full-time athletes.
Still, if they're good enough & hungry enough they'll make it. But there must be a fair few who are living on peanuts with no real prospect of making it, due to their lack of natural ability perhaps (sorry sir, but you're 0.2 seconds too slow over 100M - its time for you to buggar off & get a proper job!)
