Does anyone know, I'm not sure if this is a written rule across the land or not.....

In the UK, do you own / are you responsible, for the garden fence on the left or the right?

Whichever side the vertical supports are situated - normally.

Just phoned the land registry and it was the fence on the left which would coincide with your theory.

I have always found , for good of neighbour relations
if the fence needs replacing I always offer to go half's on the cost
then you can say the kind of fence you want

i suppose the fence on the "left" would depend on which way you are facing
