just getting ready to write an essay on Corporate social responsibility and thought i'd ask the T2W community a li'l question.

How important is a companies social responsibility record and the way they report it to you in your investment decisions?

i read a thing on CSR in the economist about 5 yreas ago now, basically the point was that CSR is a made up thing just to make more money for hte company. Like "food miles" or whatever.

the problem with CSR is that you get politically motivated people messing around wth your company and its profits (HINT: Comapre Rio with BP and Halliburton after the whatsit spill). So Rio might be a great company (or trafiggura, another good example cos of the injunctions) for revenue streams and div yields, but of the lefties get in government they get spanked to earn votes.

It would also be interesting to look at the amount an industry spends on CSR (like, say, organic food) and the subsidies (tax etc) or chartitable donations it gets.
