This going to be done to death by the media, especially the Spanish media, which will be squeezing the last drops for months to come! The Spanish elections, Catalan independence, corruption is driving us insane. Podemos, the new up and coming party, complete with pony tails, babies in Parliament is fighting its election on Corruption and is whiter than white. It is alleged that Maduro has paid 7,000,000, euros into their account in Panama. All good stuff for the telly! Until the next thing comes along, of course.

The Achilles heel of the rich and criminals is tax dodging. Serve them right if the poxy little country grabs the lot. Dipstick/ Dumbo etc are unlikely to send in the Navy. Let them upstick and off to Panama etc. the local piranhas would soon nibble them into poverty.

I'm not so sure, Pat. These people are very hardfaced. This is a bit of a nuisance for them, unless they have done something really bad in getting the money in the first place. That is why the Pujol family is in the courts, but a lot of the offshore stuff is legal.

However, a lot of this I don't like much. Is it really necessary to name Cameron for his dad's activities? At least, keep it quiet until proved. However, the press has it, so there is no way to keep it dark, especially if the name is well known.

The Public has the right to know!:D

Tax dodging is a serious offence, especially on their scale. Many of the rich are into every scam going. West London used to be a delightful, not too expensive area. Now it's full of rich non doms with Philipino maids. Did our politicians get rewarded ? Who knows.

I don't have a major issue with it as long as the beneficieries are not hypocrits who outwardly condemn but secretly take part.

That is the problem. We have a whole section of the governing PP party, which seems to have its roots in Valencia and stretches to Madrid that is, truly, disgusting.

If interested,Google "Gurtel Case" Wikipedia gives a good account and an be read in English. In addition, Andalucia has had a good dip into government coffers--they would be the Socialist Party, down there. The king's sister and husband are in the courts, right now.

Jordi Pujol and Family are a right lot of villains. Papa Pujol was Cataluña's president for 23 years and shouted to the rooftops about Madrid's corruption while I have been reading that he and his sons have creamed off over a billion (con B) to offshore accounts.

The king's auntie has an account in Panama, I learn.

So,what happens in the UK will not surprise me and Putin raises no eyebrows here, at all.

I think a lot of people who thought they were anonymous are now wearing nappies. I wonder if there will be any gagging orders

Yes very true. Distinction needs to be made between - as we all know it:

- tax evasion = illegal
- tax avoidance = legal

This is what pure capitalism is about so all good. What's all the moaning about?

Otherwise, I'd like to see all the outraged nations take it to a vote at the UN and bomb the **** out of Panama if they don't give us all the names and monies that they have, belonging to our national citizens. Right?

Hillarious, as if this is news. The Tories brought in a guy to close loop holes who him self uses these legal offshore tax havens him self.

Is that conflict of interest or lapse of judgement? Go figure!

I'm getting to a point where I'm seriously going to investigate how I can use these tax havens. If you can't beat'm join'm. ;)

Surprised we haven't had a thread started already.

So, once again we have all the ingredients. Tax, tax avoidance, crony capitalism, banks, regulators, politicians, governments, rich and powerful.

Biggest casualty so far is Iceland's PM.
This whole situation has epic lulz potential !

Where was the tax avoidance? Which politicians were tax evading? So, were there not any politicians from socialist countries or parties involved in this scandal?

Oh do keep up H.

This is all about legitimate, or otherwise, ownership of assets deliberately parked offshore so as not to be accounted for nor included for tax purposes in the rightful jurisdiction. For all those individuals or companies involved in such schemes, it means that "everyone else" is required to pay higher taxes.
It is also about money laundering and artificial layers that serve only to hide who the beneficial owners of these assets are.

I was keeping up. It is not tax evasion if it is legal. Don't be sour because people have found ways to decrease their tax liability.

I was asking how all the things that you mentioned were involved. You called it crony capitalism and mentioned it in a corruption thread. Are you implying that this type of behavior does not happen in socialist countries? If not, then why single out capitalism?

The regulators and regulations do not seem corrupt, if everyone is allowed to take advantage of these benefits. It is also not that difficult to achieve either. If you do not want to pay more taxes, then your answer is simple. The means to decrease your tax liability exist and are within reach.

I wonder where Trump is in all this!

I heard on the radio this morning that in Norway everyone's tax records are open to public scrutiny. No wonder the crime and anti-social levels are low there.

As far as I know the revelations about the tax dodging hogs is only from one solicitor's company. What about all the rest I hear you ask. The public worm has turned and laws should e tightened.

Talk about not having a clue!

"I hate people who avoid paying taxes on profits" said the spread-better.
