What are your opinions on the "best" messenger service / chat room channel software to help a bunch of traders working together?

A few that I know of are:
IRC's Othernet
MSN
Yahoo Messenger
PalTalk
HotComm

Each has its advantages and disadvantages. For e.g. HotComm has voice, text and video which allow for the sharing of charts with everyone but the disadvantage is that it's pricey. The top prize for collaborative trading is something which shares voice, text and video. IRC on the otherhand is fast and efficient but only has text and you must open charts via a link posted in the channel.

What are your best experiences with collaborative software for trading in a group on the net? What has proved to be a boon for you?

No experience to offer but 2 others you could look at:

Skype - free and you can voice conference up to 5 people - also has text chat and file transfer capabilities.

ICQ is another.
