Looky at what my higher tax rates are paying for

Here's some fodder for you guys who like to poke fun at US politics.
Obama Orders Pay Raise For Congress, Federal Workers, Joe Biden

Disgraceful.

Hard luck having such people in power. Is he buying them ?

Our lot are maybe even worse with a freeze on the lowest pensions, unemployment benefit etc. and tax cuts for the rich !

I see the new French President, who got elected promising a 75% tax on the top earnings has had his plans squashed by the Court which is obviously controlled by the rich.

What part is disgraceful?

President Barack Obama gave a New Year's gift to returning members of Congress, federal workers and Vice President Joe Biden on Thursday, signing an executive order calling for an end to a years-long pay freeze.

As of March 27, 2013, federal employees will see a half-percent to one percent pay increase, marking the end of a pay freeze that has been in place since late 2010. Congress hasn't seen a pay raise since 2009 .

Have I missed somefink??? :whistling

I have no issue with the rank and file federal employees getting pay raises. They deserve them as much as anyone else. It's the politicians that send this country down the hell hole and now can't even decide how to attempt to get this country out of it that deserve NOTHING. They absolutely have no regard whatsoever about the citizens. All they've done for their huge 6 figure salaries is get TV time so they can blame the other guy. Some of them have more time spent on TV than in session. It's about money and getting reelected and that part they do well.

Obama is only proposing tax increase on top earners who as Warren Buffet clearly expresses (along with Romney and his cronies) pay less than your middle income earners. I recall the number being nearer 15-17%.

There is no other way out of this debt crises other than raising taxes and combining with reduction in expenditure.

It is the Republicans which are clearly in the wrong here. They need a lightning bolt up their back sides imho.

We've had the same issue here and it sickens me. One financial councillor in a local authority cuts jobs and get £175K bonus on top of her huge salary for doing her job. ie the salary of 10 low paid workers she just laid off.

It is the way of the capitalism as perceived by politicians. Not exactly pure economics but more like pure theft by politicians and people in power to me.

I share your outrage if it is directed at the Republicans (y)

Does anyone else here think that they might actually want to go over the fiscal cliff even if for just a day or so, so that taxes etc go up automatically, and then they make a deal which lowers them to level that's still higher than before. Therefore giving them all the ability to tell the stupid folk that they lowered taxes come the next election cycle.

Apologies as is a bit off topic.

I only support everyone's outrage if it is directed at ALL politicians regardless of their allegiance. What makes these ******s think that they are entitled to spend "other people's money" in such a way that they deem is better than if the people spent it themselves.

Corporate Capitalism aided and abetted by useless politicians is quite rightly failing. The sooner people wrestle control back, the sooner the US starts to deal with it's problems.

We keep hearing from the gun lobby that it is everyone's right to bear arms and that one of the founding principle reasons for this is so that govt can be kept in check. To my mind the people should march to capitol hill and remind the pollos of their place (public servants) not their masters !

I hate all politicians. I've said it here many times. But Atilla is quite right about the Republicans here. They lost the election, time to suck it up and move on.

What I hate is that nearly every vote on anything is split right down party lines. Most of them never even read the final bills up for vote but refuse to buck the party stance. Whether the bill is good or not is irrelevant. They should all be drawn and quartered.

How about just voting them out. The founding fathers of this country gave the people the most powerful weapon against government, the power of the vote. Unfortunately they gravely underestimated the stupidity of the American voter.

Peter

But by voting somebody out you got to vote somebody in right, representative democracy

True. Politicians #1 priority is staying in office. If the trend is to vote a lot of them out after only 1 or 2 terms they will have to change their tune and actually get things done if they want to continue.

A pipe dream, yes, we all know that won't happen but that's what needs to be done otherwise we get them same cr@p year after year. There's ZERO incentive for them to do anything at all when the same politicians keep getting reelected---some for 30+ years now.

I like your perspective on life CV. I really do. I'm reading around off-grid living and I realise we have no rights over land we own.

Looking at buying land and in the legal blurb dictates you can't build on it, establish solar or wind power and all kinds of clauses that requires one to approach the council to get planning permission from loads of tax revenue consuming bureaucrats. How stupid is that???

Sometimes - if one looks at our stupid system with exorbitant house prices the cost of building something half decent and more eco friendly is only likely to cost £50K really.

I think what we are all looking for is some reasonable decent balance but it's like passing the camel through the eye of the needle. Just ain't happening... :(

I hear you, but even with elections every four years its difficult to really get anything done, and they spend most of the time squabbling amongst each other anyway, time and resources which could be spent sorting out the countries problems.

I was thinking what it would be like to have no parties, and people vote online on important issues, the outcomes of which the state are required to act on, direct democracy. Obviously laymen don't know enough about certain subjects but you would have advocacy groups arguing their case and trying to educate people in the build up to a big issue being voted on.

If you guys are interested in how things should be as opposed to how things are, then these vids are worth watching.
throw in some Ron Paul and we are just about there IM (not so) HO:)

I like Friedman, but with the way things are going I think more socialism is inevitable. I made a thread about this but like most of my threads everybody ignored it (I told myself it might be more of an elitetrader kind of topic). But to summarise my concern is that with more and more jobs being automated and most people having only their labour to sell, Capitalism will mean people who don't own "means of production" will become more and more marginalised, until finally they have had enough and hello Marxist-Leninism.

Think about the "jobless recovery" we are having.

The bodies on the polar extreme end are in denial.

It was the free unregulated markets in finance that led us to where we are today.

Similar to the gun fans calling for more guns so people can defend them selves, these people are calling for 'more' free-er unregulated markets so people can determine how best to spend their monies.

Crazy just doesn't say it???

What we need is balance!
