I don't think that's a valid question. Some web based platforms (like Thompsons) use Java. And some don't (like Proquote, I think).
Also I think there is a seperate server providing templates and hsitoric data.
The charts on some platforms use Java.
From my experience I don't think the difference is relevant. As long as the correct version Java software is loaded, then you shouldn't have problems.
The machine on the next desk to me is running Thompson but seems to have it's Java missing or corrupted and therefore will not work.
Due to security I cannot reload Java, but on a home machine this would be no problem.
When I had Quote Terminal (uses Java) I could run it anywhere, even on my mobile 'phone.
Now I have Proquote (no Java) and that does exactly the same.
Woops! I have just googled "does Proquote use Java" and it does, so I would assume every web-based platform utilises Java!!
