I've been hijacked - help!

I installed a new Pc ibm (win xp)and whilst checking if everything was working ok I went onto the net without any virus software/router or firewall. I know! Iknow! (i won't do it again)

The problem I have is now the pc is high jacked it won't let me load Norton Internet security or allow me to go on any web sites that do PC virus checks.Clever buggers!
Since I can not load any software to clean the PC or get on any web sites without the hijacker's permission. I am considering doing a full operating wipe and re-install?
Is this my best line of attack and how difficult is a re installation.

Gardan, I did the same, about 3 seconds after I got online I picked up the sasser virus which kept shutting the computer down every 60 sec.I phoned a local guy who gave me a disk to clear it -for free.Try phoning round and describing the problem I'm sure you'll get a disk from someone at a minimal cost.
 
You could always disconnect from the web and buy a retail box anti-virus and install that.
 
ardhill : I done just that but the Norton 2005 Internet security retail disk will not load.I think the bugger is blocking it even when I have disconnected from the net. Luckily I can switch to a different pc (like now) to communicate.
Can not believe I was so stupid to go on line naked.
I am really considering wipe the hard disk since it has not a lot of stuff on yet. Anyone know how??

if your online now you can download cw shredder from softpedia and save it to disk to run on your infected computer.

if you want to re-install your xp disk will guide you through this.

I assume from this previous comment that you installed XP yourself, if so then that is good. If you haven't installed XP yourself then, it may get a bit tricky for you, especially if you need to install drivers.

Anyway...

You need to re-format the drive (that cleans it), I believe that you can have this option if you re-boot from c: Drive with your XP disk. (Sorry, I am accustomed to doing it with a Windows 98 Start Up disk)

So, insert the XP disk. Follow the instructions to re-format the drive or partition, then re-install Windows on your new clean drive.

Actually. Microsoft.com is normally pretty good at helping out if you have a problem with any of the procedure. Go to the site and search for the key words in the site search box, you will get a list of possible help topics.
 
Gardan,I've dealt with a rash of hijack and auto dialler problems over the last few weeks. Most PCs were so stuffed with rubbish a reformat was the only answer but in a couple of cases the XP 'repair' option do the trick . It saves some time and doesnt lose you any data. You will find it as one of the options if you boot up with the XP cd already loaded.

I think I have trashed the pc completely now!!! So it's off to the techie shop tomorrow for them to sort out.
The nuisance is they will probably take at least three days and I will have to blame in on my poor kids again.

What is the problem? You haven't told us what the hijack is. If you don't give information ,we don't know how to clean it.
 
Kids, you just can't trust them.

You go out for the evening and return to find your computer really messed up bad. I mean it was working perfectly before you went out... :)
 
Oatman: Sorry! how do you find out who the hijackers is?? I'm sure he was wearing a mask! seriously how do you know is there a way to find out?

Oatman: It was pretty impressive what happened if that's the right word. It was as if someone was using my PC whilst I watched. I mean they even started trading for me! which was great because it's the first time I have been in profit!!!!
Seriously the virus did take over the PC.
1, A brand new PC with nothing on it went from lightning fast when browsing to snail pace with a broken leg.
2, Re-directing all searches to sites they wanted me to go to.
3, shutting the PC down when they wanted, yes switching it off. Scary!!!!
4, Not letting me go to any anti virus sites.Very scary.
Basically it felt like they had total control and I was annoying them. I have tried to repair it with my XP disk but I am pretty sure I have trashed it,big time! I am off to the techies now to ask them to wipe and re install the lot. A bit frustrated losing a full day and night messing with it.But a good lesson learnt me thinks.

First download update and run Ad-aware and Spybot. http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Fix everything that Ad-aware finds but only prechecked red in Spybot.
Then go to PcPitstop HijackThis forum http://pcpitstop.ibforums.com/index.php?showforum=25
Download HijackThis from http://radiosplace.com/

Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\HJT\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there, and double click to run it.

Press the Scan button to scan.

When the scan is finished, the “Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and post its contents in HijackThis Logs

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.

Thanks oatman: unfortunately I didn't read your above until after I dropped off the PC at the techies shop. But I am about to use the above on this PC to see what infections I might have. I will let you now how I get on.
When I pick up the other fixed PC I am going to put a ADSL Router/Switcher in front of it as well as Norton Internet 2005, any thoughts on this set up. What is the easiest/best router or switcher in your opinion?

Just another thought this PC which is part of a home network.Server -Router ect Runs great but MSN keeps hijacking my Google home page. This is annoying but now it worries me after my experience yesterday. Will the stuff above sort this?
Also I was speaking to a techie when I took in the other PC (which the kids trashed???) and he said a lot of problems come from the Microsoft Internet Explorer and the word on the street is to try a new Internet explorer called "Firefox" ever heard of it?
The idea of the new PC was to have a completely clean(laughable now) machine that was isolated away from the home network that would only run my shares stuff so would be super fast and very secure.
I have tried to police the kids trying to stop them loading MSN/Kazza and all the other crap,but they are much clever than me. They do have there own log in and passwords ect
I am also considering getting a completely new second broadband line to service this PC. Sounds like I'v lost the plot dunnit?

Any comments would be much appreciated

If you're using Kazaa you're asking for trouble. I don't know about routers. Chartman does :cheesy: I don't see how Msn is hijacking your home page. If you download Spybot with the TeaTimer feature along with SpywareGuard and WinPatrol, these will all protect your home page.

A lot of people like it. I still run IE. If your security's up to date and you don't visit dodgy sites I can't see that there are problems. Give it a go if you want. I think you've got 2 machines so try it out. You have the last word on what you let in. That's the best security ;)
