Is my cd burner kaput?

I noticed a little while ago that my pc wouldn't always boot up correctly. It sometimes gave the message "Secondary Master Drive Failed" or something like that, and my cd -burner would blink but not operate. It does this all the time now.

Is there anything I should try before going out and buying a new cd writer?

Thanks Oatman. I only have one HD but ran the utility anyway - it seems in fine fettle.

I almost hope the cd drive has gone -it will give me an excuse to buy this:
