Help-dual monitors on laptop

Hello people,
ive got an acer aspire 5536. want to set up 2 external monitops. i bought a usb to vga adapter installed the software but for some reason the computer wont recognize the 2nd monitor. ive tried the adapter on 2 different pcs and it seems to work fine.
any advice

You've got the display output Fn button set correctly?
