Hello All,

For all those Metastock Users out there, has anyone ever encountered the following error message?

"mswin has encountered a problem and has to be shutdown"

It seems to happen everytime I attempt to run an exploration!!!

I'm currently using Version 9.0 with Windows XP.

Thanks.....

Chorlton

It could be that the data file used by the explorer is corrupted.

Look in C:\Program Files\Equis\MetaStock for a file called MS9EXPL.DTA - make a backup copy of it, then delete it from the folder. Start up MetaStock and try a new exploration.

Cheers,
Richard.

I had the same error so I call tech support and they found out that I installed it on other than C drive so they send me three patch files and that fixed the problem.

Hi Richard,

After a search within the folder your suggested, I can find the following files, which have similar names to the file you mentioned.

MS70CTB.DTA
MS90EXPL.DTA
MS9EXPT.DTA
MS9FORM.DTA
Ms90menu.DTA
Ms90sntx.DTA

Would I be right in assuming that the file I should delete is MS90EXPL.DTA, as I can't find MS9EXPL.DTA ???

Thanks in advance,

Chorlton

Hi Again Richard,

I deleted MS90EXPL.DTA from the folder but once I start Metastock again, I've obviously lost all my explorations including the long list of default ones, which means I can't run the exploration again without rewritting all of them. Consequently, assuming that I have deleted the right file, is there any other way to get back the default explorations?

PS. I did take a backup of the file so I can return back to my old settings...

Regards,

Chorlton

Hi

MSWIN fault is the result of page fault......See an example of the one I had sometime back.....

MSWIN caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 0167:bff9db61.

Stack dump:

I suggest that rather than deleting any files in Equis folder is to back up the whole folder as -Equis_Back and then uninstall the MS completely.

Remove any residual files and Equis folder.

Reinstall again.

You can start the MS and then bring back all the files under backed up info into this new folder.

Alao have you reset the settings of virtual memory etc....?

Also under MS there is a command to EXPORT and IMPORT all your settings....Please do that VERY Regularly as it will save a lot of your time....

If your explorations file is corrupted then unless you have kept a backup of your formulae, you won't be able to retrieve them again... But good to hear it fixes the problems.

If you want to get the original metastock ones back you'll have to do a reinstall.... or restore from a known good backup (you do keep backups, don't you?)

Cheers,
Richard.

Hi Richard,

Sorry but I'm not sure if it fixes the problem as I wasn't able to run any further explorations to check.....

I'll write a new one tonight and see if it makes any difference....

Thanks for your help......

Zambuck,

Thanks for the reply. I have attempted to uninstall and reinstall Metastock a number of times but the problem still remains.

I've even deleted all Metastock, Equis & mswin entries in the registry before the last installation but with no improvements.

From memory, this started happening a year or so ago following a Microsoft Automatic Update for XP but at the time the problem was very infrequent so it didn't create to many problems for me.

However, as I am now using Metastock a lot more now and trying to intergrate it with TradeSim this problem is no longer acceptable.

To say I'm getting frustrated is an understatement

Chorlton

Are you saying that on a clean fresh install, when you run any exploration (even a standard built in one) you still get that error?

Cheers,
Richard.

Here is what is recommended on Equis International ONline Community.......

.....Please save or back up all important files before doing this....Also see links below....

http://www.file.net/process/mswin.exe.html

http://forum.equis.com/forums/thread/19615.aspx

Errors: MSWIN.exe runtime error

Solution 1:

Hold the CTRL+SHIFT keys on your keyboard and at the same time start MetaStock. Click yes on all of the prompts.

Caution: Editing the registry may cause irreparable damage to software programs and data files. Equis assumes no responsibility for such losses.

Solution 2:

־ Rename the Equis folder (c:\program files\Equis) to EquisOld

־ Go to START | RUN | RegEdit | OK

־ Delete the following registry entries:

־ HKEY_CURRENT_USR\Software\Equis

־ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Equis

־ Close the registry editor

־ Reinstall MetaStock

Note: if you had custom formulae, charts, templates, layouts, you will have to import them from the EquisOld folder.

Hi Richard,

I've just reinstalled it for the x number of times now!!!!!!!

I ran the Equis Price & Volume Exploration which ran very quickly and WITHOUT errors. Then I ran another exploration (Equis Bollinger Band). This was a lot slower in processing and at about 45% complete, the "mswin" error message appeared and MS crashed. My security list consisted of the FTSE100 so not that many IMO.

I'm at a loss to understand whats going on. :(

Hi Zambuck,

Thanks for the post. Unfortunately, I came across solution two on the Equis website and have already followed these instructions. Needless to say without any success.... :(

Thanks anyway though........

Richard

You know quite a bit about MS and I know that.....

...Do you think that is could be virtual memory setting issues?....

...Are MSWin faults mostly to do with page faults?

..I used to get these but haven't had these for many a years now....

....This seems to crop up when processing activity is asked for...

...Your thoughts would be appreciated......
