what I'm saying is that relative value trades allow you to express a fine-tuned view, where the contributory factors can be better evaluated, rather than being pinned to making very broad speculations where much of your PnL is determined by things you aren't even aware of.

The only two general types of edge arise from two distinct phenomena: a) liquidity provision; b) forecasting. So when one makes money consistently, one is either a) market-making; or b) predicting the future (or some mix of the two). Everything that people talk about when they talk about "edge" falls into one of the categories above.

Most retail traders only fall into one of those categories. I say most; as being a retail trader does not always mean lack of funds.
