Do you have a moment to review these system specs?

I visited the computer shop today here in Bangkok. I thought you guys might like to see a photo of the wonderfully hectic computer mall...Pantip Plaza. Each small shop (200 sq. ft. or so) competes with the hundreds of others.....since for the most part, more than half of the shops stock the same stuff. Looks crazy....but it's actually a really cool experience.

Here's what I have in terms of very preliminary specs. If you have a second to review 'em....please do so from the perspective of....."money is no issue, building the best damn system is!!" Please.......oh pleeeeeeeeease, don't let the specs below stop you from correcting any errors or omissions you think I've made, k? I'll post the specs below....and you'll notice that it is comprised of off the shelf parts. I've seen some incredible claims by a few day trading computer specialists in regards to their "overclocked" systems......which of course are not exactly "off the shelf" components.....but up to now I haven't considered going that route. Should I (obvious concerns with stability, tech support, etc.)? You'll see below that one of my questions is whether I should go for two 24" monitors or one 40" Hi-Def monitor.

Preliminary specs (preliminary meaning, specifically.....please correct / change anything or everything if you believe I can extract even one iota of additional, even incremental, performance):

CPU = Intel i7 940 quad core 8M Cache, 2.93 GHz, 4.80 GT/s Intel® QPI
Motherboard = Gigabyte EX58 Extreme
Hard Drive = 1TB buffer 32MB Western Digital
RAM = Geil 6 gig / 1333 (note: I can go 12 gig instead. If money is not an issue.....should I go for 12 gig? Meaning, will it enhance performance of the 32 bit, non hyperthreaded trading software app?)
VGA Card = Nvidia XFX 9600 GSO (note: I was told that this will handle....right out of the box.....two 24" monitors or one 40" monitor. Which would you recommend....Two 24's or one 40?)
Optical Drive = DVD_RW Asus brand
Power Supply = Gigabyte 550 GT silent
Case = Thermaltake Armor
Additional CPU Cooler = ThermalRight IFX 14 + 2 fans

OK....fire away!

I recommend two monitors - easier to handle multiple windows open.
Actually looking at you configuration - it seems like you have got it all and it is upgradeble to the max. Especially with 3 pci express you can add more monitors in future. Just remember - It is very convenient to have all monitors of the same size. so if you buy on 40'' now - you will have to (i wont make u !!) buy another 40 when you want to add monitors.
5 stars to your config.
Just make sure you have more than 6mb/sec speed on your internet - or else all this hardware is no good.
and if possible have two connections (different ISP's) one slower but for backup !! just in case.

happy trading !

honestly - that is a ridiculously overpowered trading rig (if it is only being used for trading). While I understand people's obsession with having the most up to date of everything - there are probably more reasonable (read: economical) trading rigs that will give you the same bang for your buck.

Unless you're planning to game, fold, or are rendering data, the odds of you utilizing anything nearly the capacity that rig can put out are slim to none.

If you're going to run 32bit windows, it wouldn't be able to allocate past 4gbs anyways, so hopefully you're either running a 64 bit xp or vista.

As a side note, Jokepie has excellent suggestions/comments.

Hi,

Your spec seems fine, in fact, it is far more powerful than the system I am using. Although I am only driving 2 19" monitors. The slowest part of my system tends to be the internet connection and not the hardware.

The processor speed and memory (starting with 6 gig) should give you excellent performance. I run with 2 gig of memory and a 2.6 GHz processor. The other key area that will affext the performace is the applications you are running.

The key thing is what are you going to be running on the system? Are you going to be running a real-time stock application and monitoring stock pirces in real-time? I.E are you looking at level 2 stock data feeds. If this is the case the more charts and real-time analysis tools you have open concurrently the more data will be downloaded, this could affect performance and the reliability of the connection to your data source. Do you have a fast internet connection?

I hope this has been some use, but as far as the PC spec is concerned it is fine.

Nick

Rediculously over-specc'ed imo.
Absolutely no need for a quad-core (let alone one running at 2.93), the 6 gig of ram (I assume you're running Vista64), the case (that's a 20kg case) etc etc etc.

I would not touch a PC built in Pantip Plaza. You are much better off getting an off the shelf HP, Fujitsu, Dell etc than something built by those cowboys.

People I know with self-assembled PCs always seem to be re-assembling them all the time.

I run Tradestation on a 2 year old Fujitsu laptop - centrino duo processor, 3GB Ram with an external monitor - which gives me 2 screens. I have not yet had any performance issues at all. I keep meaning to get a desktop but the laptop is fine, plus I can take it with me & trade when I travel.

Is there something you'll be running on this PC that you think merits all these bells & whistles ?
