Buying and selling h/l of asian session backtesting results

Hi Guys, first post here so play nice lol


Had a quick idea today, why not try buying a break of the high of
the asian session, or selling the low. I used the size of the box containing the
asian session as my profit target, and the other side of the box as my s/l
I used the 1h tf and have so far tested 55 trades, from about the start
of October.

the system returned about 350 pips overall, not great but better than nothing right ?
I'm going to tweak it and keep backtesting over different pairs, and of course increase my sample size.
Has anyone got any suggestions ?
win rate is awful - about 57%

Doing your own research, never a bad idea. If I could humby submit -

1. a 57% win rate on such a crude (meant respectfully, I mean no frills) starting point is good enough to justify further research (but not actual trades)

2. choice of markets might have some bearing, surely? Which are your results from? I suppose AUD, NZD and JPY pairs might be more active during the Asian session than say USD/CAD, but that means a wider overnight range: is that better for your idea or not good?

3. This reminds me of Phil Newton's range trading Youtube clips - seen them?

Hi, thanks for your reply,
yeah I'm going to see if I can get the win rate up a bit, I haven't been trading
that long but figure spending a lot of time actively looking at the market and asking questions might be a good thing to do!
this was for EUR/USD, I'm going to try a few different pairs, one that's
more active during the Asian session might be interesting , Perhaps GBP/JPY

those Phil Newton clips seem really informative, cheers for posting, lots of good stuff in there

Just on backtesting ,I was just browsing some forums a few weeks ago and came across this site ...You can get his book but basicly its only the blog entries in it so read them on the blog

He had an idea and backtested it years and it was great,went live and see what happened

ok so I have been busy doing further testing, got the win rate up to about 65%
and got the overall gain up from +344 to +1177 in the same amount of time.
seems to be going well. hopefully this one will make it out of the pile into forward testing in a demo account, then a small live one
