My current provider is NTL but I`m not very happy with them. I lost my service last night at 19.00 with 2 trades open and 3 more waiting to be filled on the U.S. market.

This is the second major breakdown in 3 months beside the more frequent loss of e-mail, everything was restored this morning as though nothing had happened.

Not sure who to go with next, may go back to Pipex, would appreciate other members experiances or recommendations

Hello, Deepheat. You live and learn, matey. Have you ever heard of this funny little invention that most people know about?

It's called a....telephone.

Maybe your broker(s) do not provide a telephone service?

Oh well.

I`m already aware of the obvious and my positions were in a safe mode.

I was hoping for more helpful information on the thread subject .

Pete,

This sounds like a very local problem as I use NTL and have never experienced this problem in over 4 years and didnt last night either. However, I think AOL are pretty good from what I have been told.

Using Bt here, and had about 2 delays 1 /2 hours over 8 months I know one was an upgrade their side , and the other.... dont know, but rural here as with the power supply we are shafted in the priority at times on resupply. . understandable.

Hi Pete,

I have had NTL for over a year and never experienced any problems. Therefore, it may be just a local problem as Trader 333 pointed out. I also have Pipex on BT line and in over 3 years experienced a dropped connection just once.

IHTH

I, like others, suffered numerous technical problems/conflicts with AOL. In fact, mention AOL to a computer specialist and they usually groan. Switching to Pipex a year or so ago was one of my better moves.

Thanks for all your help, I looked at the comparison site and Zen looked good but at a premium to what I`m paying for 1 meg with NTL. Probably worth the extra though.

Not sure if the problem is a local one (N E London) but customer service with ntl is poor. I will check out the other suggestions,

regards
Peter

Depends how you're connected. If you have cable that's one thing, but if you connect thru a normal twisted pair then you have one of two problems. Either your ISP site is down, in which case good idea to change, or you have a local loop/exchange problem. When I had connection problems I called my provider ( OneTel ) who referred me to BT as they are responsible for the copper wire down to the exchange and on to the ISP, so in this case changing provider would not have helped me.

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious here....

If youre using your telephone line for your internet connection, doesnt matter who the ISP is they will be using a BT line to deliver the service to you, I currently use BT, Ive found them to be reliable & they have a free online help service 24/7, I had used virgin, but found them unreliable, plus any problems and you need to contact them you have to pay, or you can contact them via email and get an automated reply telling you they will reply within 48 hours ? if youre lucky!

My connection is cable and again i was unable to answer the post yesterday because i lost my service. Turned on this morning and all is o.k.

Tried to phone customer support yesterday but the number I have was closed. Phoned this morning and was told they cant do anything unless i ring while i have the fault. They offered a reference number for future use which i declined and advised them to store it where the sun dont shine.

Ntl also said that tec advice is available until midnight, yet they dont offer you the number to call on the contact number i have.Really brassed off with them.

I found ntl great until something went wrong,i was with them a couple of years ago and could never get them to answer the phone. When i cancelled my account they wanted 30 days notice and they still billed me for 6 months afterwards!
With Bt now and apart from a small amount of down time( twice) i have had no problems.

i get quite a lot of problems with customers who use NTL.

FWIW, I have been with www.freedom2surf.net for over 2 years now, and have never had so much as one day of unexpected downtime. The only probs I had in 2005 were after an upgrade to 1mb adsl, and the subsequent discovery that my line would not fully support it because I live in the sticks.

Phone calls are answered normally within a minute or so, customer service emails within 24 hours max, which I think is quite acceptable.

Hi Rossord

Which package do you recommend, I have no idea what constitutes a Gig download.

I have cable but want ADSL as a backup on another computer.

Looking at their capacities, I'd say a 0.5Gb was very tight, though if it was a backup that you maybe never used, or on a rare occaision used, say one day a month max then it would be fine. There is a simple little free utility here,
http://www.netlimiter.com/
which will monitor you computer bandwidth usage and allow you to see how much demand you put on it each day. For a backup, I would say there is no way you'd need more than 1Gb per month, otherwise you should seriously consider changing your primary as they must be going down a lot. I run eSignal, about 15 charts, and maybe 20 symbols quotes throughout the market day, and my usage is 80 - 100 Mb for it.

Personally I think that this problem has a lot to do with line noise rather than the service provider per se. If BT are working on lines in the area you're going to pick up problems at that time

Hi Rog
There is quite a bit of building work near me and they like cutting through cables now and then. Also the other day I was disconnected and told by NTL that they were doing maintenance and that I would have an intermittant service for about 6 hours.

Thanks Rogue
I will check it out. I use 3 computers, one for emails/general use and two for trading.

Of these TradeStation is on one and on the other I have IB and SierraCharts and Bracket-trader.

There is a duplicate of everything on each of the trading computers, so if one went down I would only need to open the other applications. I would use one computer on each line.

Ordered a UPS and have the brokers numbers at hand.

As I keep telling everyone, there are some nice and helpfull people on T2W
Thanks

virgin.net has worked fine for me over the last 16 months. Rolling monthly contract £17.99 for 2mbps.....
