What a lot of opportunities America has missed in the 20th century. Such as ? You might say.
1. President Wilson's mis-handling of the end of WW1, which led on to WW2
2.Not joining The League of Nations in the 1930s, which was the only body that could have prevented WW2.
3. Having got nuclear weapons first and then feebly let other nations acquire them. Even unstable countries like N. Korea have them when they can't be trusted with a bow and arrow.
4. The fiasco of Vietnam barely registered into the Washington political conscience and was therefore tried again and failed again in Iraq and Afghanistan. Einstein's famous definition of lunacy was amply demonstrated.
5. The current mess in The Middle East surely proves more meddling isn't going to solve their problems.

Certain parts of the country definitely are not. Unlike other countries that are the size of states, The U.S. has more diversity (unfortunately). California is always fighting with the fed because places like Kansas want as much as California gets. It costs 100x more to live in California as it does there. They might as well be separate countries they are so different.

What do I care about a federal information breach. I am not a federal employee. I didn't really care about the 2008 recession. Housing prices didn't even fall around me. People are around never stopped spending money like they feared. They kept working and dining out.
